Find out how these changes will affect logistics and international transport planning

What will change for international freight transit?
According to the new requirements, from January 1, 2026, international freight transit through Hungary will only be allowed on a specific part of the Hungarian road network, specially designated for transit freight traffic. This primarily concerns motorways and higher category roads.
Where will trucks be allowed to drive?
As stated in the official announcement, freight vehicles will be able to:
- travel mainly on motorways and major roads;
- only leave them for the shortest distance to their destination;
- avoid lower-category roads, where additional restrictions will be introduced.
On many regional and local roads, there are plans to introduce bans or significant restrictions on the movement of freight vehicles.
Elements of the transit network, as well as detailed traffic conditions, will be published on the National Access Point, which is operated by the Hungarian Road Service.

In addition, the service's specialists have already prepared an interactive map showing:
road signs restricting freight traffic;
national roads where restrictions apply;
permitted routes for transit traffic.
It is important to note that the new rules may affect not only transit traffic, but also international freight transport with a destination directly in Hungary. From January 1, 2026, such carriers may also face additional restrictions on certain sections of the road network.
What should carriers take into account?
International road carriers, logistics companies, and truck drivers are advised to do the following in advance:
familiarize themselves with the updated transit rules;
check routes using the official interactive map;
plan transportation taking into account possible restrictions on lower-category roads.
The introduction of the new rules aims to optimize transit traffic, reduce the load on local roads, and improve road safety in Hungary.
