How much does a budget ski vacation in Europe cost, and which resorts offer the best value for money? Find out which eight destinations Lonely Planet recommends for the 2025–2026 season and how to prepare for an active trip
Winter travel is traditionally associated with high prices and crowded resorts. However, extreme tourism expert Tamara Hinson argues otherwise in her Lonely Planet blog: there are a number of locations in Europe where you can ski with excellent service and on a small budget. These are not “cheap” resorts, but ones that offer the best value for money — from Italy to Slovenia and Slovakia.
This is especially relevant for Ukrainians who are planning a winter vacation abroad but are looking for the optimal balance between cost, logistics, and level of service. Below is an overview of the eight best budget destinations in Europe for the 2025–2026 season, according to Lonely Planet.
Sestriere, Italy — the best value for money
One of the most popular resorts in the Piedmont region and part of the famous Via Lattea ski area. It is a large, modern, and diverse resort, but at the same time more affordable than many Swiss and French counterparts.
Advantages of Sestriere:
● An extensive network of trails for all levels;
● Good infrastructure and modern lifts;
● the opportunity to find accommodation not in the center, but in neighboring villages, significantly reducing costs.
Grand Tourmalet, France — a large selection of routes
One of the largest ski resorts in the Pyrenees, combining two ski areas: Barèges and Luz-Sainte-Sauveur. The resort is known for its mild climate, wide slopes, and fantastic views.
Who it is suitable for:
● Intermediate skiers who want to improve their skills;
● Families with children;
● Those who want to ski a lot but pay less than in the Alps.
Vogel, Slovenia — ideal for beginners
Located in the heart of Triglav National Park, Vogel is one of the best options for a first skiing holiday.
Why Vogel:
● Simple and safe slopes;
● Incredible views of Lake Bohinj;
● The opportunity to combine skiing with spa treatments, excursions, and thermal springs.
It is also a good option for those traveling by car: Slovenian roads are in excellent condition, and the cost of a ski pass is lower than at many Alpine resorts.
Tip: If you are planning an active vacation, it is worth having insurance with extreme coverage. In many EU countries, mountain rescue operations are paid for, so tourists take out a policy in advance. You can do this online in a few minutes at Visit Ukraine (be sure to select extended extreme coverage — this is an additional feature in Silver, Gold, and Platinum policies), — such insurance covers skiing, snowboarding, rescue on the slopes, and other risks.

Jasná offers:
● the most affordable ski passes among major European resorts;
● many slopes for progress;
● good opportunities for freeriding.
Orel, France — affordable accommodation without compromising on service
The resort is located in the famous Morienne mountain region and is known for allowing you to save on accommodation without compromising on skiing conditions.
Advantages of Orel:
● a large selection of budget apartments;
● convenient transport links;
● access to a large network of trails.
Bardonecchia, Italy — the best access to the resort
Located near Turin, Bardonecchia is a great option for those who want to minimize logistics.
Advantages:
● easy access from major cities;
● modern slopes and gentle terrain;
● suitable for both beginners and experienced skiers.
Serre Chevalier, France — guaranteed snow
One of the snowiest valleys in the French Alps. Serre Chevalier has stable winter conditions and safe routes for all skill levels.
Why choose Serre Chevalier:
● High-altitude areas with guaranteed snow
● Large selection of trails
● Many options for families
Alpbach, Austria — classic Alpine charm
One of the most beautiful ski resorts in Austria. Alpbach combines traditional wooden chalets, cozy streets, and high-quality slopes.
Who it's for:
● families looking for a peaceful vacation;
● those who appreciate authenticity;
● tourists who want good service at a reasonable price.
We remind you! Demand for winter trips to the Carpathians is growing every day, and prices are changing rapidly depending on location and demand for the holidays. Tourist regions are already almost full, and vacations in the mountains are becoming more expensive, especially in top destinations.
