Europe is known for its lakes, but only a few of them can inspire genuine admiration at first sight. These are the very lakes that made it into the selection created by The Independent. These are places where nature, history and emotions intertwine so harmoniously that a trip there becomes a special experience.

Which lakes made the list and why they are worth seeing at least once with your own eyes — we will tell you more in this article.

Como: Italian classic with Hollywood charm

Hidden among the mountains and picturesque towns is one of the most famous lakes in Europe — Como. This place is associated with an exquisite Italian atmosphere, ancient gardens and landscapes that have been used dozens of times in films. Travelling between Como, Bellagio and Varenna is like taking a leisurely stroll through an art gallery: with each new angle, a different part of the lake opens up. The funicular to Brunate is an adventure in itself, as from above you can see not only the sparkling surface of the lake, but also the small towns nestled on the slopes. On the shores, it is worth finding time for the peaceful botanical gardens of Villa Carlotta, as well as for a leisurely stroll through the cobbled streets of Bellagio, which have preserved the spirit of old Italy.

Lake Geneva: the grandeur of the Alps and the atmosphere of legends

This huge body of water, located between Switzerland and France, impresses with its scale and history, which comes to life thanks to the local landscapes. It was here, in Villa Diodati, during a storm, that the idea for Frankenstein was born, and today thousands of tourists come to experience this atmosphere for themselves. The most exciting part is the journey on the Rochers-de-Naye railway: it crosses meadows and forests and climbs to a height of over 2,000 metres, from where you can even see the Eiger and Mont Blanc. In Montreux, you can visit the fairytale Château de Chillon and then take the Belle Époque steamboat towards Geneva. The highlight of the trip is the Jet d'Eau, the highest fountain in Europe, with a jet rising 140 metres.

Bled: a Slovenian fairy tale with an island in the centre

Bled is a lake that looks as if it were painted by hand. Emerald water, a picturesque island and a 15th-century church in the middle of it create the atmosphere of a real postcard. From any point, the water appears transparent and calm, and above the lake stands a castle built on a sheer cliff at a height of over 130 metres. You can reach the island by pletna, a traditional Slovenian boat that has remained virtually unchanged for centuries. For the best shots, climb up to the Oistrica or Mala Osovnica viewing points, as from here you can see all the beauty of the lake surrounded by the Julian Alps.

Loch Lomond: Scottish nature in its purest form

Just 32 km from Glasgow, you are already among rolling hills, misty mountains and calm waters stretching over 70 km². Loch Lomond is the largest lake in Great Britain, and every corner of it has its own history. There are about 30 islands scattered around the area, some of which are open to visitors, including Inchmurrin. Here you can walk along paths to 14th-century ruins, see the remains of a monastery and finish your walk at a local restaurant. For those who enjoy active recreation, it is worth climbing Ben Lomond. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views, and in clear weather, you can see almost the entire valley.

Lovatnet: a Norwegian lake for those seeking peace and quiet

This lake is one of the least crowded but most impressive places in Norway. Its 11-kilometre length, blue glacial water and high mountains look particularly harmonious. Lovatnet is known for being impressive at any time of the year: morning mists, steep waterfalls almost a thousand metres high, mountain slopes that change colour depending on the light. One of the most spectacular views is from the old Rakssetra farm. The old huts, standing high above the northern shore, create a perfect contrast to the deep blue lake.

Ohrid: ancient history and vibrant nature

Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest in the world, and this is clearly felt in its atmosphere. It is home to over 200 endemic species, including Ohrid trout and a unique freshwater sponge. In summer, the water warms up to 24 °C, making swimming one of the main pleasures here. The city of Ohrid impresses with its diversity: narrow streets lead to 13th-century temples, including the Church of St. John in Kaneo, which stands on the edge of a cliff. And the ‘Bay of Bones’ museum, created on the site of an ancient stilt village, transports travellers back to a time when life around the lake was completely different.

Achensee: the Austrian ‘fjord’ that leaves no one indifferent

This lake with incredibly clear water, which is comparable to drinking water, is located among steep cliffs and alpine meadows. In summer, the water warms up to 20 °C, so people swim, go canoeing and take boat trips between Pertisau, Achenkirch and Maurach. To see the lake in all its beauty, you can take the historic cog railway, which has been operating since 1889: the ascent passes through forests and slopes and ends with a panorama from a height of almost 1,000 metres.
