What financial support can Ukrainians receive in Spain?
From 2023, persons with temporary protection status in Spain will not be eligible for basic monthly cash assistance, but it will be possible to apply for low-income benefits, which will be issued for a limited period. The amount is fixed throughout the country and does not depend on the region of residence. Adults receive a separate fixed payment, and an additional amount is provided for children. Thus, the total amount of assistance is calculated for the entire family.
Support is provided for a maximum of six months. There is no question of its extension or re-receipt, as the programme is designed specifically for temporary stabilisation.
Who is eligible for assistance in Spain?
Ukrainians who meet all the necessary conditions can apply. Social services check:
– the validity of temporary protection status;
– lack of sufficient financial resources;
– official residence at a specific address in Spain;
– lack of other types of state assistance that already cover living expenses.
If a person is staying in a state accommodation centre or receiving another type of support for refugees, they cannot apply for financial assistance. In such cases, it is replaced by another form of support.

How to apply for benefits in Spain: step-by-step instructions
To receive financial support, you must complete several steps:
1. Confirm your status. Temporary protection status is issued by the National Police or CREADE centres. First, a certificate is issued, then a TIE card.
2. Confirm your place of residence. You need to register with the local council and obtain a ‘certificado de empadronamiento’. Without this document, social services will not open a case.
3. Contact a social worker. Servicios Sociales conducts individual consultations to assess your financial situation and your family's readiness to live independently. Appointments are usually made in advance.
4. Provide documents. When submitting your application, you may need:
– your TIE card or temporary protection certificate;
– current empadronamiento;
– confirmation that the applicant has no income;
– Spanish bank account number for receiving payments.
After verifying the data, the social worker will make a decision. If the answer is positive, the funds will be transferred to the specified account on a monthly basis.
What should you pay attention to when applying for assistance in Spain?
Spain implements this programme at the municipal level. Because of this, the conditions for registration, queues and the speed of processing applications may vary depending on the city. Sometimes social services ask for additional documents, for example, to confirm the composition of the family or the actual financial situation.
The final decision is always made by the local Servicios Sociales. They have the right to either approve or reject the application.
When staying abroad, it is important for Ukrainians to have valid medical insurance, as this is a requirement of many EU countries and a practical guarantee of protection in case of illness or unforeseen situations.
