In 2023, the European Commission conducted a large-scale study on life satisfaction in European cities. The survey covered 71,153 respondents from 83 cities in the EU, the UK, and Turkey, which made it possible to rank the places where residents feel most comfortable and safe.

The ranking not only shows the level of happiness of residents, but also reflects real living conditions — accessibility of services, safety, public space, and trust within communities. Such analysis often becomes a benchmark for those planning to move or temporarily live abroad.

Gdańsk — a Polish city with an almost perfect level of satisfaction

In Gdańsk, 95% of residents are satisfied with their lives, making it one of the most comfortable cities in Europe. The city has a rich historical heritage and is one of the key ports on the Baltic Sea.

Gdańsk is also considered immigrant-friendly: its developed infrastructure, stable labor market, and European safety standards make it a popular destination for those considering moving to Poland.

Leipzig — a German city for young people, families, and lovers of clean air

In Leipzig, the level of life satisfaction is also around 95%.

The city is attractive to young professionals and families with children thanks to its balance between an active urban rhythm and quiet residential areas. Residents particularly appreciated the air quality: 83% of respondents said they were completely satisfied with it — an important factor to consider for those planning to stay long-term.

Copenhagen — the capital of safety and high living standards

Copenhagen is among the top three: 96% of respondents are happy to live in this city.

The Danish capital is known for its high level of safety, developed bicycle transport, environmental programs, and stable economy. The only challenge residents mention is affordable housing: it is really difficult to find an apartment or room at a reasonable price here.

Groningen — a safe, green, and inclusive city in the Netherlands

Groningen showed one of the highest levels of satisfaction — over 96% of residents.

The city is known for being safe and welcoming to immigrants and members of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as for its many public and green spaces.

The high level of trust among residents is also unique: 86% of those surveyed believe that most people in the city can be trusted and feel safe walking alone at night. Such a level of trust is rare even for developed cities in Europe.

Zurich — European leader in quality of life

Zurich became the absolute leader in the ranking, with 97% of residents satisfied with their lives.

The Swiss city demonstrates high results in all key indicators: quality of transport, level of medical care, clean air, stable labor market, and financial security of the population.

Zurich was also named the best city for LGBT+ people and seniors. The only downside, according to respondents, is the availability of housing: only 11% agreed that it is possible to find a good option at an affordable price.
