Europe is full of little-known but amazing cities that deserve your attention. Find out which five destinations experts have named as the most interesting for a vacation in 2026
When popular European tourist destinations such as Barcelona, Rome, or Prague are overcrowded, experienced travelers look for alternatives. It turns out that the continent is full of equally charming but unfairly overlooked places. Experts from the travel publication Travel Off Path have named five such cities that are worth visiting in 2026. They combine authenticity, architectural beauty, the hospitality of local residents, and a tranquility that is often lacking in more famous tourist centers.
Trondheim, Norway — a medieval gem in the north
If Norway only brings to mind Oslo or Bergen, you should check out Trondheim — the country's former capital, where history literally comes alive at every turn. The city's main attraction is Nidaros Cathedral, the northernmost medieval church in the world, which has been an architectural symbol of Norway for over a thousand years. Its Gothic spires rise in the heart of the Bakklandet district, where narrow streets are lined with colorful wooden houses, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee wafts from the windows of local cafes.
Travelers are advised to take the time to stroll along the banks of the Nidelva River, lined with a series of historic warehouses converted into galleries, restaurants, and guesthouses. Trondheim is the perfect city for those who appreciate Scandinavian comfort, authentic architecture, and a quiet life without the hustle and bustle of tourism.
Nafplio, Greece — a former capital that has retained its charm
On the Peloponnese peninsula, a two-hour drive from Athens, lies Nafplio, the city that was the first capital of independent Greece. It has a special atmosphere of grandeur and tranquility. The city impresses with its Venetian fortresses, neoclassical houses, majestic squares, and the Arvanitia promenade, which offers views of the Aegean Sea.
The main symbols of Nafplio are the Acronafplia fortress, which rises 85 meters above the sea, and the Bourtzi castle, located right in the middle of the bay. Both places are worth visiting not only for the panoramic views but also to feel the spirit of ancient Hellas.
After a walk through the historic center, it is worth visiting the local taverns, which serve homemade siglino (salted pork) and aromatic wine at prices far from those in tourist-oriented Athens.

Vic, Spain — a quiet alternative to Barcelona
While Barcelona welcomes tens of millions of tourists every year, the small Catalan town of Vic remains out of their attention. And in vain. It is a real medieval gem with Gothic architecture, arched squares, and cozy streets leading to ancient temples.
The central square, Plaça Major, is surrounded by historic buildings, cafes, and tapas bars, where life flows as calmly as it did hundreds of years ago. The Roman temple of Vic, built in the 2nd century, and the Episcopal Museum, considered one of the best in Spain, deserve special attention.
For those who want to see Catalonia without the tourist crowds, Vic is the perfect weekend getaway.
Quimper, France — the Celtic soul of Brittany
French Brittany is a region that has preserved its own language, traditions, and even its Celtic character. Its heart is Quimper, a city with a distinct cultural identity. The old town is surrounded by medieval walls and dominated by the majestic Saint-Corentin Cathedral, an architectural gem that can easily compete with Notre Dame in Paris.
A walk through the Vieille Kemper district is a journey through time: narrow stone alleys, half-timbered houses, local craft shops, and the spirit of ancient Europe. The Locmaria district, located on the banks of the Oda River, is known for its restaurants serving traditional French pancakes with fillings and locally produced cider.
Trenčín, Slovakia — European Capital of Culture 2026
The city of Trenčín in Slovakia is often compared to a small Prague. Its old town is a labyrinth of cobbled streets and picturesque squares leading to the main landmark — Trenčín Castle. The fortress towers over the city, offering a breathtaking panorama of the Váh Valley.
In 2026, Trenčín will become the European Capital of Culture, so throughout the year there will be numerous festivals, exhibitions, concerts, and street performances. This is a great opportunity to see how contemporary art blends harmoniously with historical charm.
