A family vacation is always a balance between comfort, experiences, and budget. For most families, traveling abroad is a significant expense, so planning the itinerary and choosing the destination play a key role.

Family travel expert and founder of The Travel Mum blog, Jen Carr, shared her recommendations with Express on the best cities to visit with children this fall. According to her, a well-planned trip allows you to get the most out of your experience on a moderate budget.

“As a mother of two and a fan of affordable travel, I want to prove that you don't have to spend a fortune to create unforgettable memories. It is often cheaper for our family of four to fly abroad than to spend a vacation in the UK,” said the expert.

Where to go for an inexpensive family vacation in Europe?

Porto, Portugal

This compact and extremely atmospheric city is ideal for a short trip. Narrow streets, colorful houses, and a quiet riverfront make Porto convenient even for traveling with small children. The city has a measured rhythm that allows you to enjoy your vacation without rushing.

Budapest, Hungary

The capital of Hungary is a real treasure for family travel. One of the most interesting places is Margit Island: a green, car-free area with playgrounds, go-karts, and a mini-zoo. In addition, there is a cruise on the Danube, which children especially enjoy.

Jen Carr advises tourists to purchase a Budapest Card, which opens up a world of possibilities: unlimited use of public transport, free admission to museums, and even a river cruise. For families, this is a real money saver.

Krakow, Poland

This city combines historical heritage and affordability. Families can enjoy architectural landmarks, visit interactive museums, and spend less on leisure than in many other European cities. Accommodation and restaurant prices are reasonable, and the real highlight is the traditional milk bars (bar mleczny), which serve local dishes at very affordable prices.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Despite its reputation as one of the most expensive cities in Europe, the Danish capital offers plenty of free entertainment. Families can visit modern food halls offering dishes from around the world at affordable prices, or opt for the Copenhagen Card. It allows unlimited use of public transport and free admission to over 80 attractions. A nice bonus is that children can be added to the card for free.

Prague, Czech Republic

Fairytale architecture and a cozy atmosphere make Prague one of the most popular destinations for families. A walk across Charles Bridge, meeting street musicians, or river cruises are experiences that will remain in your memory for a long time.

According to Jen, the main rule for tourists in Prague is to avoid taxis. City trains and public transport are not only affordable but also reliable.

How to prepare for a family trip

When planning a trip with children, it is important to consider not only entertainment, but also safety and financial nuances. The expert advises booking accommodation and transport in advance to avoid price increases during the peak season.

It is also worth taking care of protection against unforeseen situations. To do this, tourists need insurance for traveling abroad — it will guarantee assistance in case of illness or travel delays. Ukrainians can conveniently take out a policy online on the Visit Ukraine portal.

And those who plan to travel by car should remember about international insurance, the Green Card. It is mandatory for entry into most European countries. You can also apply for a Green Card online on our website.
