Do Spanish citizens need a visa to enter Ukraine?

As of 2025, there is a visa-free travel agreement between Ukraine and Spain. This means that Spanish citizens can stay in Ukraine without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This regime is suitable for tourism, short business trips, visiting friends and family, and participating in cultural or sporting events.

However, if you plan to stay in Ukraine for a longer period of time — for example, for work, study, family reunification, or permanent residence — you will need to apply for a long-term visa (type D) and a residence permit.

The following categories of foreigners are eligible to apply for a “D” visa in Ukraine:

1. Employees (those who have received an invitation from Ukrainian employers);

2. Students (who have enrolled in Ukrainian educational institutions);

3. Relatives of Ukrainian citizens or foreigners (who already have a residence permit);

4. Entrepreneurs and investors (who have started a business or are investing in the Ukrainian economy);

5. Volunteers and religious figures (with official invitations from relevant organizations);

6. Employees of diplomatic missions and international organizations.

If you plan to stay longer in Ukraine or need legal support, Visit Ukraine's immigration lawyers will help you with all the paperwork.

What types of visas are available to Spanish citizens?

Short-term visa (type C)

This visa is issued to foreigners whose stay does not exceed 90 days in the last 180 days. It can be obtained by Spanish citizens who plan to work or study in Ukraine for up to 90 days. There are two subtypes of type C visas: C 01 (business visa) and C 02 (private visa).

Long-term visa (type D)

Issued to foreigners who wish to enter Ukraine for a temporary but long-term stay or for permanent residence. A D visa grants foreigners the right to stay or reside in Ukraine for a period exceeding 90 days.

Transit visa

This type of visa is issued to foreigners who intend to transit through Ukraine while traveling to a third country. A transit visa to Ukraine can be issued as a single-entry visa for up to five days, or for up to one year as a double or multiple-entry visa, provided that each entry does not exceed 5 days.

Documents required for a visa to Ukraine

To apply for a visa, Spanish citizens usually need:

● a valid foreign passport;

● a completed and signed visa application form;

● a standard photo;

● documents confirming the purpose of the trip (employment contract, invitation from a university, official letter from a relative, etc.);

medical insurance for the entire period of stay in Ukraine;

● proof of financial solvency (bank statements, certificates, letter of guarantee from the host party);

● tickets or travel itinerary;

● in some cases, a certificate of no criminal record.

All documents issued in Spain must be legalized and translated into Ukrainian.

Please note! The package of required documents may vary depending on the type of visa and the purpose of your trip.

How does the procedure for obtaining a visa to Ukraine work?

Step 1. Prepare your documents

Determine the type of visa according to the purpose of your trip and prepare all the necessary papers.

Step 2. Submit your application

To apply, fill out the online form on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. You must indicate your citizenship, the purpose of your trip, and the country from which you can apply. Here you will find information about which Ukrainian embassy, consulate, or visa center in that country you can apply to and obtain a visa.

Step 3. Pay the consular fee

The standard consular fee for a visa is around €60, or around €120 for urgent processing.

Step 4. Visa review and issuance

The standard review of documents takes 10-15 business days. In urgent cases, it takes up to 5 business days. The consul has the right to request additional documents or schedule an interview.

Is it possible to obtain an electronic visa (e-visa) to Ukraine from Spain?

Unfortunately, Ukraine does not currently offer the option of applying for an electronic visa for Spanish citizens, so all documents must be submitted in person.
