Polish border guards have begun testing a new biometric control system at checkpoints in the Lviv region. This was reported by the State Border Service of Ukraine (SBSU).

Under the new procedure, biometric data is recorded when crossing the border: facial recognition and fingerprinting. This will apply to both entry into Poland and exit from Ukraine.

The SBS warns that processing citizens may take a little longer due to additional verification steps.

How does the new system work?

SBGS spokesman Andriy Demchenko explained during a telethon that there are currently no significant queues. At the same time, he reminded viewers that the EU is generally preparing to introduce a border crossing registration system for all Schengen countries.

“This may, especially in the beginning, slightly delay the process of processing each citizen who crosses the border. Accordingly, this may affect waiting times and the formation of queues,” Demchenko said.

According to preliminary information, the system should be fully operational in October.

From October 12, 2025, the rules for crossing EU borders for Ukrainians will change. Read what you need to know about the update here.

Where will it be tested and what should you know?

The main focus is on road border crossing points and pedestrian border crossings.

Implementation is more difficult on rail routes, so checks are likely to take place at the final points of arrival of trains — in specially equipped stationary control areas.

According to the State Border Service spokesperson, these checks should not cause delays to train services.

Border guards are urging Ukrainians to take possible delays into account when traveling and to plan their journeys with plenty of time to spare. This is particularly important for those traveling by plane or changing trains in the EU.

If you plan to travel abroad by car, don't forget to get international motor insurance
(Green Card). This is a mandatory document for crossing EU borders in your own car, without which you may be denied entry. You can get a Green Card online in a few minutes before your trip.

Reminder! In August 2025, the rules for crossing the border with Poland were slightly changed, in particular regarding confirmation of financial solvency. We explain what documents are required for travel to Poland and what could cause a refusal of entry to Poland in 2025 in our article.
