Low-cost airline Wizz Air leaves Vienna Airport: what will happen to flights and passengers?
Wizz Air has announced the gradual closure of its Vienna base due to rising costs and a shift in focus. Find out which routes will be canceled and what travel options remain for travelers
Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air has announced the closure of its base at Vienna Airport after seven years of operation. The decision is due to rising costs and taxes in Austria, which have made operating flights from Vienna incompatible with the airline's ultra-low-cost business model.
When will Wizz Air's Vienna base close?
The closure will take place in two stages:
On October 26, 2025, flights to Bilbao (Spain) and London Gatwick Airport (UK) will be discontinued, and two aircraft will be taken out of service.
On March 15, 2026, the remaining three aircraft will be taken out of service, and Wizz Air will completely close its Vienna base.
As a reminder, Wizz Air opened its base in Vienna in 2018. As of today, its fleet of five Airbus A321neo aircraft serves 28 routes in 20 countries.

Why is Wizz Air leaving Vienna?
The airline's statement says that in recent years, the cost of operating flights at Vienna Airport has increased significantly. Instead, Wizz Air is focusing on developing its key markets in Central and Eastern Europe, where it can maintain low fares thanks to a strict cost control policy.
What should passengers do?
The airline has promised to contact passengers who purchased tickets for flights after the route discontinuation date directly. They will be offered several options:
- a full refund to their WIZZ account;
- rebooking tickets for another Wizz Air flight.
Passengers who purchased tickets through third-party sellers are advised to contact their agencies or suppliers directly.
The company also advised Austrian travelers to use the nearest airports — Bratislava (Slovakia) and Budapest (Hungary), where Wizz Air continues to expand its route network.
Wizz Air's prospects in the region
Despite the closure of its base in Austria, the airline is actively strengthening its position in neighboring countries. In particular, a third aircraft will appear at Chisinau Airport (Moldova) in the winter season of 2025–2026, and the route network will expand significantly.
