Gasoline and diesel remain one of the key factors affecting not only car owners' expenses, but also the cost of transportation, logistics, and even products in stores. Learn more about where fuel is cheapest and where it is most expensive, as well as forecasts for the coming years
In 2025, the difference in fuel costs between Ukraine, the US, and EU countries remains significant. While Ukrainian motorists traditionally compare their expenses with those in Europe, a real comparison with US prices shows that fuel in Ukraine is more expensive than overseas, but cheaper than in most European Union countries.
Ukraine
The average price of A-95 gasoline in Ukraine in August 2025 is about $1.40 per liter (approximately 59 hryvnia). Diesel costs about the same — around $1.40. Despite periodic slowdowns in the rate of price increases, prices rose again in June–July.
The main factors were the instability of the global oil market and the weakening of the hryvnia against the euro. Forecasts by the NBU indicate that in 2026–2027, fuel will become even more expensive due to an increase in excise taxes.
United States
In the United States, prices remain the lowest among comparable regions. In August 2025, the average price of gasoline was $0.83–0.86 per liter, while diesel cost between $0.92 and $0.98 per liter.
This is almost half the price in European countries and significantly lower than in Ukraine. This difference is explained by large domestic reserves, low tax burdens, and the energy independence of the United States.
Forecasts indicate that prices will remain stable or even decline by the end of the year.

European Union
In Europe, the situation is the opposite: high taxes and environmental standards make fuel the most expensive.
On average, the price of gasoline in EU countries in August 2025 fluctuates at around €1.70 per liter (approximately $1.85). Diesel has a similar cost — $1.65–1.85 per liter, depending on the country.
The most expensive fuel is in France and Germany, where prices exceed $1.90 per liter, and the lowest prices are recorded in Eastern European countries, particularly Bulgaria and Poland.
The difference in figures
Ukraine: gasoline and diesel — about $1.40 per liter (≈59 UAH).
USA: gasoline — $0.83–0.86 per liter, diesel — $0.92–0.98.
EU (average): gasoline and diesel — about €1.70 per liter (≈$1.85).
Thus, the US remains the world leader in fuel affordability, with gasoline and diesel costing almost half as much as in EU countries. Ukraine occupies an intermediate position: fuel here is more expensive than in the US, but still cheaper than in most European countries.
In the coming years, Ukrainians should prepare for a gradual increase in prices, while in the US, prices are likely to stabilize, and in the EU, prices are likely to remain high due to strict tax policies.
