The European Commission has officially set 12 October 2025 as the start date for the gradual roll-out of the European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES). From this date, the system will be introduced in stages, replacing the usual stamping of passports with automated digital recording of the entries and exits of third-country nationals.

What is the EES and how does it work?

The EES is a modern technological platform that will digitally record the entries and exits of non-EU citizens visiting 29 European countries (including Schengen area members) on short-term visits. The system will collect biometric data, such as fingerprints and facial images, as well as information about documents and travel routes, replacing the outdated practice of manually stamping passports.

💡 When entering the EU, be sure to take care of your safety and comfort. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can purchase travel insurance for your trip to Europe in advance. This coverage guarantees medical assistance and other important services during your trip.

Benefits of EES for border management

With the introduction of EES, EU external border management will reach a new level: the system will provide accurate and reliable data on border crossings, help to automatically detect cases of overstaying, document fraud and illegal migration. In addition, automated checkpoints will make travel more convenient and safer for travellers.

Rights and data protection

The system has been designed to meet the highest standards of personal data protection and confidentiality. The EES guarantees that travellers' information will be protected and stored in accordance with legal requirements.

Implementation schedule

▪️ 12 October 2025 — start of the phased launch of the EES.

▪️ Over the next six months, the system will be implemented gradually: border services will begin to register the entries and exits of third-country nationals. Passports will continue to be stamped during the transition period.

▪️ Full readiness date — 10 April 2026 (or 9 April 2026), after which the system will be fully operational at all border crossing points and stamps will no longer be used.

The Commission, together with eu-LISA (the EU Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems), will work with Member States to ensure the smooth implementation of the EES.

Information campaigns and events at border crossing points, including airports, are also planned so that travellers are aware of the new procedures in advance.

The EES is part of a broader EU package of measures called ‘Smart Borders’, which includes, in addition to the EES, ETIAS (the travel authorisation system) and automated control systems (ABC). Together, they are designed to ensure more efficient, secure and convenient movement of people across Europe.

🚗 If you are planning a trip to Europe in your own car, don't forget to get a Green Card — international car insurance, which is mandatory when entering the EU. You can do this quickly and easily online at the Visit Ukraine portal. The insurance covers possible damages in the event of an accident abroad and saves you from problems at customs.

Reminder! After 24 February 2022, many Ukrainians left the country with their pets. Since then, the rules for crossing the border with animals have been significantly improved. Find out what documents you need to enter Ukraine with an animal in 2025.
