In recent years, the Czech Republic has been one of the most popular countries for emigration among Ukrainians. Its convenient geographical location, cultural proximity, developed economy and demand for labour make it an attractive destination for both temporary protection and long-term residence. In recent years, especially after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the number of Ukrainians obtaining Czech citizenship has increased significantly. Last year, Ukrainian citizens became the leaders among new Czech citizens.

How many Ukrainians have obtained Czech citizenship

According to the Czech Ministry of the Interior, 6,880 foreigners received Czech passports last year. This is 443 more than a year earlier. Thus, the Czech Republic continues to show steady growth in the number of new citizens, which is associated with both changes in migration flows and the simplification of integration procedures for those who have been living in the country for a long time.

The largest group among new Czech citizens is Ukrainians. In 2024, 1,487 Ukrainians became Czech citizens, which is 230 more than in the previous year. This indicates a high level of integration of the Ukrainian community and its active desire to establish itself in Czech society on a permanent basis.

For comparison, Russians rank second in terms of the number of naturalised citizens, with 1,077 people, but their number has decreased by almost a hundred compared to last year. Slovaks rank third with 967 passports, which is 109 more than a year earlier.

Growth in the number of applications for citizenship

In 2024, the Czech Ministry of the Interior received 6,254 applications for citizenship. This is 19% more than in the previous year. Experts cite the war in Ukraine and the associated migration as the main reasons for this growth. Many Ukrainians who already have the right to permanent residence in the Czech Republic have begun to actively apply for citizenship in order to secure their legal status and obtain additional social guarantees.

How can Ukrainians obtain Czech citizenship?

One of the main conditions is legal residence in the country for a certain period of time - from 5 to 10 years, depending on individual circumstances. Applicants for citizenship must be well integrated into Czech society, comply with legal requirements, have no criminal record and pay taxes on time.

A key requirement is knowledge of the Czech language. The applicant must pass a language test that assesses their level of proficiency in both written and spoken language. In addition, it is necessary to prove stable financial status and a steady income.

There are several ways to obtain Czech citizenship:

1. By birth - if at least one of the parents is a Czech citizen;

2. Through adoption - if one of the adoptive parents has Czech citizenship;

3. Establishment of paternity - if the child's father is a Czech citizen;

4. If the child is found in the Czech Republic - if an infant under the age of 3 is found in the country and his or her identity cannot be established;

5. Restoration of lost citizenship - for persons who were previously citizens of the Czech Republic or Czechoslovakia;

6. Marriage to a Czech citizen - one of the most common ways to obtain citizenship;

7. Naturalisation or family reunification - the process of obtaining citizenship for persons who have been legally residing in the country for a long time;

8. Special cases of obtaining citizenship.

The Czech Republic may grant citizenship for special merits. These may include humanitarian, cultural, sporting, scientific or educational contributions to the development of the state. If a person has made a significant contribution to the social life of the country, the government may consider their application on an individual basis.
