Car insurance for travelling to Europe: Green Card for Ukrainians in 2025
A valid Green Card is required to enter European Union countries in a car with Ukrainian number plates. This is an international insurance document that confirms insurance coverage in the event of an accident. It is checked not only when crossing the border, but also during any roadside stop within the EU.
If you do not have a policy or if it has expired, you may be fined and, in some countries, temporarily banned from driving. It is therefore important to ensure that your insurance is valid for the entire duration of your trip.

What is a Green Card for a car and how does it work?
A Green Card is civil liability insurance that is valid in foreign countries. It covers damage that you may cause to other road users, their property or vehicles.
The policy is issued for a specific period: 15 days, one month, three months, six months or a whole year. You choose the duration yourself depending on your plans.
The Green Card is valid in most European countries, including all EU members, as well as countries such as Switzerland, Norway and Iceland.

The difference between the Green Card and local motor insurance
Many drivers are interested in the difference between the Green Card and the insurance purchased by local residents in Europe. In fact, these two documents have different legal status.
A Green Card is an international confirmation of car insurance that is recognised by other countries. Local insurance, on the other hand, is only issued for cars with registration numbers from a particular country.
For Ukrainian number plates, the only option for legal travel on EU roads is a Green Card. It is much easier to obtain and does not require any additional procedures for re-registering the vehicle. This is especially true if your trip is short-term.

Insurance for Ukrainians abroad: do you need to take out a local policy?
Usually, a Green Card is sufficient. It fully covers the requirements for short-term stays within the European Union. However, if your stay is prolonged and you live in one of the EU countries for more than six months, local authorities may require you to re-register your car and take out domestic insurance in accordance with their legislation.
Additional insurance may also be mandatory if you are driving a car rented abroad or have purchased a car with local number plates. In such cases, a Green Card is no longer valid — you will need European motor insurance.
