Who needs health insurance to enter Denmark?

Health insurance is mandatory for many categories of travellers:

- Travellers from non-EU countries (including Ukraine) are required to have a health insurance policy to apply for a type C visa (Schengen visa). The policy must cover the entire period of stay in the Schengen area.

- Students. In case of long-term stay (D visa or residence permit), it is necessary to have both initial insurance for obtaining a visa and subsequently to obtain local health insurance.

- Employees and specialists are also required to have initial insurance and register with the local healthcare system upon arrival.

If you are travelling on a visa-free regime, insurance is not formally required, but it is strongly recommended. In case of illness or accident, medical care in Denmark is expensive.

Local insurance for refugees from Ukraine

Refugees from Ukraine who have been granted temporary protection in Denmark are entitled to free healthcare within the state system. After registering and receiving a CPR number (equivalent to a tax ID number), they automatically gain access to the healthcare system.

However, before registering, it is necessary to have initial insurance - it is better to take it out in Ukraine.

You can read more about how to apply for temporary protection in Denmark, social support and basic rules for refugees here.

Mandatory Green Card for a car when travelling abroad

If you plan to drive your own car to Denmark, you must have an international insurance Green Card. It confirms that you have insurance that is recognised in European countries, including Denmark. Without this card, you will not be allowed to cross the border.

On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can apply for a Green Card online in just a few minutes.

Requirements for insurance policies for travelling to Denmark

For short-term trips (up to 90 days) within the framework of a Schengen visa:

- coverage of at least EUR 30,000;

- the policy is valid in all Schengen countries;

- Coverage for emergency medical care, hospitalisation, and transportation of the body in case of death.

For long-term trips (D visa, residence permit):

- Initial policy for applying for a visa;

- upon arrival, registration in the Danish public insurance system.

What kind of insurance can I get for Denmark?

After registering in Denmark, foreigners can take advantage of the public health insurance system. However, it does not cover treatment outside of Denmark, is not suitable for applying for a visa, and is quite expensive for people without resident status.

Therefore, the best option is to take out a policy in Ukraine through trusted insurance companies, for example, on the Visit Ukraine portal. It is much cheaper and allows you to meet the requirements for a visa or border crossing.

What does the insurance cover that can be issued at Visit Ukraine?

When choosing an insurance policy for a trip to Denmark, it is important to understand what risks are covered by different insurance options.
