All citizens, including foreigners, must insure their cars in Ukraine. Find out what insurance provides basic protection against risks and helps avoid significant financial losses in case of unforeseen situations, and how foreigners can obtain it
Car insurance in Ukraine is a mandatory requirement for safe and legal travel within the country. It is especially important for foreign drivers to take these rules into account in order to avoid fines and ensure peace of mind in unpredictable situations. Let's take a look at the main aspects of car insurance for foreigners.
General rules of car insurance for foreigners
To drive on Ukrainian roads, every driver must have a valid policy of compulsory civil liability insurance for owners of land vehicles (OSCPV). However, this insurance is not mandatory for foreign drivers if their vehicle is not registered in Ukraine and is entering the country for a short period of time. In such cases, foreigners need to obtain an international motor insurance policy, known as a “Green Card,” in the country where their vehicle is registered. This policy is valid in all countries participating in the system, including Ukraine and EU countries.
It is also important to remember that standard motor insurance only covers damage caused to third parties and does not protect the owner's car from damage or other risks. For these purposes, there is additional insurance, such as KASKO and its simplified version, "Basiс Kasko". We will discuss the second option in more detail.
Car insurance "Basiс Kasko" – a profitable solution for foreigners in Ukraine
For a temporary stay in Ukraine or as additional protection for a car with foreign registration, Basiс Kasko is the best choice. This type of insurance is profitable due to its reduced cost and fairly broad coverage.
Basiс Kasko is a simplified form of car insurance that covers specific risks. Unlike full KASKO, a Basiс Kasko policy is more affordable while still providing protection against key threats.

What does Basiс Kasko cover?
On the Visit Ukraine website, you can purchase car insurance "Basiс Kasko" with different coverage options. Currently, three packages are available to customers:
● Economy: compensation for damages in the event of an accident involving another car;
● Basic: coverage of damages in the event of an accident involving another vehicle and compensation in the event of total destruction of the car due to natural disasters;
● Maximum + war risks: includes coverage of the “Economy” and “Basic” packages and additionally contains protection against passive war risks and coverage of tow truck services.
This insurance can be taken out for a period of 1 month to 1 year. Thus, this type of insurance will be the optimal choice for all drivers who are looking for basic protection at a reasonable price and do not want to overpay for full KASKO coverage.
Please note that a Basiс Kasko insurance policy cannot be taken out for the following vehicles:
● those older than 10 years of age and/or those with any additional equipment installed in the vehicle;
● vehicles used for military operations and those related to any volunteer, military, humanitarian formations, etc.;
● technically faulty at the time of insurance or unregistered;
● Russian and/or Chinese-made.
