When planning a trip to European Union countries via Ukraine's western border, many travellers choose Hungary as a convenient route. This is especially true for residents of western regions who are looking for the best way to cross the border. Knowing the current rules, the schedule of checkpoints and the situation with queues is important for a comfortable journey.

Hungary - Ukraine Border Crossing Points


There are 9 border crossing points between Ukraine and Hungary, including 6 road, 2 rail and 1 checkpoint:


1. Dzvinkove – Lonya.

Type of connection: road (except buses).

Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Central European Time.


2. Kosino – Barabash.

Type of transport: road (except buses).

Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Central European Time.


3. Vylok – Tisabec.

Type of connection: car.

Operating hours: around the clock.


4. Chop (Tisa) – Zakhon.

Type of connection: car.

Operating hours: around the clock.


5. Luzhanka – Beregsurany.

Type of connection: car.

Operating hours: around the clock.


6. Velyka Palad – Nagyeghodozs.

Type of connection: road.

Operating hours: from 07:00 to 18:00.


7. Chop (Druzhba) – Zakhon.

Type of connection: rail.

Operating hours: round the clock.


8. Shalivka – Epereshke.

Type of connection: railway.

Working hours: round the clock.

Rules for crossing the Ukraine-Hungary border


How to enter Ukraine via Hungary?


Foreigners and stateless persons must comply with certain customs and border requirements. To enter Ukraine in 2025, you must have the following documents:


– Valid foreign passport. Citizens of Turkey and Georgia can enter with ID cards.

– Visa, if required by law or intergovernmental agreements.

– Documents confirming the purpose of the trip – invitation, accommodation booking, family ties certificates, etc.

– Proof of financial solvency – cash, bank statements, payment cards or a letter of guarantee from the host party.

– Green card, if you are entering the country in your own car.

– Voluntary car insurance — Mini CASCO. Recommended for additional protection on Ukrainian roads. You can take out insurance on the Visit Ukraine portal at the link.

– Medical insurance taken out with a company recognised in Ukraine or with an insurer with partnership agreements in Ukraine.


For safety reasons and due to the state of war, it is recommended to take out medical insurance covering military risks. This will ensure access to assistance in case of emergencies. The policy can be taken out online through the Visit Ukraine service.




How to leave Ukraine for Hungary?


Ukrainian citizens planning to travel to Hungary in 2025 will need the following documents:


– Internal and foreign passports.


If travelling by car, you will also need:


– International driving licence.

– Vehicle registration certificate with information in Cyrillic and Latin.

– Sticker indicating the country (UA).

– State registration number.

– Green card – international insurance certificate for cars. You can purchase a policy on the Visit Ukraine portal at the link.


Attention! Before travelling, you must purchase medical insurance with international coverage, which will provide access to medical services abroad in case of illness or emergency. You can purchase such insurance online on the Visit Ukraine portal in a few minutes.
