For how long can I get a Green Card for my car to travel abroad?

When planning a trip abroad by car, it is important to obtain a Green Card policy for the appropriate period in advance. The choice of period depends on your plans and frequency of travel. Find out the minimum and maximum periods of validity of the Green Card and the terms for which this insurance can be taken out
A Green Card is an international insurance policy that confirms your financial responsibility for any damage caused to third parties while using your vehicle outside the country of registration. It is mandatory for entry into most European countries, as well as Turkey, Iran, Tunisia and Morocco.

Minimum and maximum validity of the Green Card
▪️ Minimum term: 15 calendar days. This is an international requirement, and even if your trip lasts only 1-2 days, the policy is still issued for 15 days. Short-term insurance for a shorter period is not available.
▪️ Maximum term: 12 months (1 year). This is the maximum period for which a Green Card policy can be issued.
Various options are available between these extremes: 1, 2, 3, 6 months, etc. The choice depends on your travel plans and how often you travel abroad.

How to choose the term of the policy?
When choosing the term of the policy, consider the following factors:
1. If you plan to travel abroad several times a year, it may be more advantageous to take out a policy for a longer period.
2. Take out a policy for the entire period of your stay abroad. If you are not sure of the exact dates, it is better to choose a longer term to avoid having to extend the policy abroad.
3. Compare the cost of policies for different terms. Sometimes several short-term policies can be cheaper than one long-term policy. The cost of a VU policy from the insurer TASS depends on the term, type of vehicle and country of destination. For example, a 15-day policy can cost around 1,142 UAH, a 1-month policy — 1,931 UAH, and a 1-year policy — 14,310 UAH.

Important points to consider when applying for a Green Card

To verify the authenticity of the policy, you can use the MTIBU database by entering the policy number or the vehicle registration number.
And remember that not having a valid Green Card when travelling abroad may result in fines, vehicle detention or a ban on entering the country.
Reminder! From 2025, the rules for obtaining and using a Green Card have been slightly changed for all drivers travelling abroad. Find out how you can now use your insurance policy.
