Motor third party liability vs Mini hull insurance: differences in compensation in case of an accident

Car insurance is a mandatory requirement and a legal requirement for safe travel on the country's roads. Depending on the conditions, insurance may cover damage caused to your or another car, as well as other damages. We will discuss compensation for accidents under OSAGO and Mini Hull insurance policies further in this article.

Motor third-party liability insurance and Mini Hull: what is the difference?

Motor third-party liability insurance (OSAGO) is compulsory motor insurance for all vehicles in Ukraine. Article 21 of the Law ‘On Compulsory Insurance of Civil Liability of Owners of Land Vehicles’ establishes that every driver must have a motor third-party liability insurance policy. Failure to have compulsory insurance leads to administrative liability, namely the imposition of fines.

Please note! Motor vehicle insurance is issued for the vehicle itself, not its owner, so it covers all drivers who have legally operated the vehicle.

What damages does motor vehicle insurance cover?

Motor vehicle insurance provides for only one type of compensation: the insurance company of the person responsible for the accident compensates the injured party for the damage. However, it should not be forgotten that the amount of compensation in the event of an accident is limited: the insurer will pay the injured party no more than 250,000 hryvnia for car repairs, or no more than 500,000 hryvnia if the driver's health has been harmed. If this amount is insufficient to cover the damage, the person responsible for the accident will have to cover the rest themselves.

At the same time, according to the new rules, the victim contacts their insurance company, not the insurer of the person responsible for the accident. The insurance company pays for the repairs without any deductions.

Mini Hull is voluntary car insurance that covers other damages and can be used in addition to your existing motor insurance policy.

With Mini Hull insurance, the driver of the vehicle can count on compensation even if they are found to be at fault for the accident.

What damages does Mini Hull cover?

Unlike compulsory motor third-party liability insurance, depending on the package selected, Mini Hull covers the cost of repairing your own car if the driver is found to be at fault, tow truck services, and total destruction of the vehicle as a result of a natural disaster or passive risks of war.

For convenience, Mini Hull insurance is available in three tariffs to choose from, which differ in the damages they cover:

● Economy package: compensation for damages in the event of an accident involving another car;

● Basic package: coverage of losses in the event of an accident with another vehicle and compensation in the event of complete destruction of the car due to natural disasters;

● Maximum + military risks package: includes coverage of the Economy and Basic packages and additionally includes protection against passive risks of war and coverage of tow truck services.
