Request: Hello, I have started a business and have been invited to attend a camp for businesspeople and entrepreneurs in the US. I am from Ukraine and have been living in the Netherlands as a refugee for three years now. I work, pay taxes, etc., and have a Dutch driver's license. My question is whether it is possible for me to get a visa to the US for at least a week, and how and where to do it. How much will it cost?
Can Ukrainians with temporary protection in the EU obtain a visa to the US – legal advice from Visit Ukraine
In general, this situation is typical for citizens who left their country due to the war and received temporary protection in EU countries. Despite the fact that you are a citizen of Ukraine, you can apply for a visa not only in Ukraine. The US considers visa applications not only based on citizenship, but also on legal residence. Your legal stay in another country (in this case, the Netherlands) for more than 3 years, employment, payment of taxes, possession of a national driver's license, etc. allows you to apply to the US embassy for a visa in your country of residence.
What type of visa is required for a short business visit to the US?
A non-immigrant B1 (Business Visitor) visa is suitable for a short-term visit for business purposes. It allows you to participate in business camps, conferences, forums, negotiations, training, etc., but does not allow you to work in the US.
What do I need to apply for a B1 visa to the US?
To obtain a visa, you must:
1. Complete the DS-160 visa application form (online on the US State Department website).
2. Create a profile on the website of the US Embassy visa center in the Netherlands.
3. Pay the visa fee — $185 (≈€170).
4. Make an appointment for an interview at the US Embassy in Amsterdam.
5. Prepare a package of documents:
● Valid Ukrainian passport (valid for at least 6 months after the expected date of return);
● Proof of your legal residence in the Netherlands (temporary protection permit, registration, ID);
● Invitation from the organizers of the business camp in the US;
● A letter explaining the purpose of your trip;
● Proof of financial solvency (bank statements, certificate from your place of work).
● Proof of ties to the Netherlands (employment contract, rental agreement, family, or other factors indicating your intention to return).

What are the risks of obtaining a US visa if you have temporary protection?
The main risk is suspicion of immigration intentions. The US Embassy does not want to issue visas to those who may remain in the country illegally. Therefore, your task is to convince them that you plan to return to the Netherlands after the event.
Your temporary protection status is not an obstacle, but it may require clarification during the interview. That is why it is so important to prepare in advance.
How long does it take to obtain a B1 visa for the US?
● Submitting the application form and scheduling an interview — 1-2 weeks (depending on the queue).
● After the interview, a decision is usually made within 7-10 days.
During peak periods, delays are possible, so Visit Ukraine lawyers advise submitting documents at least one month before your trip.
