Planning a trip to Norway? Make sure you have reliable insurance.
Who needs insurance to enter Norway?
According to official sources and Norwegian legislation, medical insurance requirements for entry into the country depend on the nationality of the person and the purpose of their stay.
Who needs medical insurance to enter Norway?
According to the official website of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI), medical insurance is a mandatory requirement for the following categories of foreigners applying for:
1. Residence permit (Residence Permit) on the basis of:
– education (if the duration of education exceeds 3 months).
– work (in most cases).
– family reunification (in some cases).
2. Long-term visa (national visa) for stays exceeding 90 days.

For whom is medical insurance desirable for entry into Norway?
According to the official website of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI), medical insurance is strongly recommended for the following categories of persons entering Norway:
Tourists and persons on short-term visits (up to 90 days): Although medical insurance is not a mandatory requirement for entry for tourist purposes or on a short-term Schengen visa, the UDI strongly recommends that you have a medical insurance policy that will cover the cost of treatment in case of unforeseen health problems or accidents during your stay in Norway. Medical services in Norway can be quite expensive, and having insurance will help you avoid significant financial expenses.
Citizens of countries with which Norway has visa-free agreements for short-term travel: Even if your category of citizens does not require a visa for short-term stays, taking out medical insurance is a wise step to ensure your financial security in case you need medical assistance.
What medical assistance is available to refugees in Norway?
Information about medical assistance for refugees in Norway can be found on the official website of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and on the website of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI).
In general, persons who have been granted temporary protection in Norway are entitled to necessary medical care while their case is being processed. The scope and conditions of medical care may vary at different stages of the asylum procedure.
During the asylum application process: Emergency medical care and treatment for acute illnesses are usually provided. Accommodation in refugee centres often includes access to basic medical services.
After obtaining refugee status: Persons who have been granted temporary protection in Norway usually have access to the health care system on an equal footing with Norwegian citizens, although there may be certain restrictions at the initial stage.

What car insurance policy should you choose to enter Norway?
To enter Norway by car, you must have a valid motor vehicle liability insurance policy, known as a ‘Green Card’.
The Green Card is an international insurance certificate that confirms the existence of civil liability insurance coverage in the member countries of this system, including Norway (designated ‘N’ or ‘Norway’).
Before travelling to Norway, make sure that your Green Card:
– is valid in Norway;
– is valid for the entire period of your stay in the country.
If you do not have a Green Card or it is not valid for Norway, you will have to purchase border insurance (Frontier Insurance) at the border crossing point. However, obtaining a Green Card in advance from your insurance company is a more convenient and often cheaper option.

What kind of insurance can you get in Norway?
Before travelling to Norway, we recommend that you take out insurance in your country of residence. Of course, you can do this upon arrival in the country, but in this case, there is a risk of encountering a number of unpleasant situations, such as:
– limited coverage (only Norway);
– high prices;
– misunderstanding of the nuances of Norwegian legislation;
– possible misunderstandings in translation.
