Domestic life in Ukraine and Europe has many similarities, as globalisation blurs the boundaries between cultures. However, there are also significant differences that reflect the peculiarities of mentality, traditions and the level of infrastructure development. Food, healthcare, online services, shopping, delivery and transport all take on a different shape from country to country. Another special topic is life in Ukraine during martial law, which affected all aspects of everyday life.

The article below explains the differences between everyday life in Ukraine and Europe.

Culinary traditions: home cooking versus ready meals

Ukrainian cuisine is a storehouse of traditional dishes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Borsch, varenyky, pancakes or homemade pickles are a constant part of many family tables.

The difference is that Ukrainians value home-cooked food more, whereas in many European countries, convenience foods or restaurant meals are more popular. In Europe, diets are often based around simple and healthy ingredients, but the flavour component may be less pronounced for those who are used to the spice-rich Ukrainian dishes.

Supermarkets in Ukraine offer both locally produced and European brands. However, an important nuance is that in peacetime, there are many more convenience stores that allow you to buy food spontaneously even late at night. In many European countries, such establishments are only open until 8-10pm, which can be a challenge for Ukrainians who are used to flexibility.

Healthcare: between affordability and quality

Ukrainian healthcare remains more affordable than European healthcare, but the quality of services may vary by region. In Europe, healthcare is often paid for, but insurance covers a significant portion of the costs. In Ukraine, public healthcare services are available free of charge, although private clinics are gaining popularity due to their higher level of service.

During the war, the Ukrainian healthcare system adapted to new realities. Foreigners planning to visit Ukraine should take out health insurance that covers war risks. This will allow you to feel safe even in difficult conditions.

Digital revolution: online banking and public services

Ukraine has impressed the world with its digital transformation. The Diia app allows Ukrainians to access many government services, including paperwork and business registration, with just a few clicks.

Online banking has also reached a high level: transfers, utility bills, account management are all available via mobile phone. Transferring funds via a mobile app takes just a few seconds.

In Europe, digital services are developing, but their integration often varies from country to country. For example, in some regions, people still prefer to use paper cheques or conduct banking transactions in person, which may come as a surprise to Ukrainians.

Transport: freedom of choice and cost

Public transport in Ukraine remains affordable, especially compared to European standards. Subways, minibuses, buses - all of which allow for fast and relatively inexpensive travel, even in large cities. At the same time, the quality of infrastructure, especially in the regions, is inferior to European roads and systems.

In Europe, public transport is often environmentally friendly and extensive, but the cost of travel can be an unpleasant surprise. However, Europeans are accustomed to bicycles and electric scooters, which are also actively developing in Ukraine, especially in large cities.

Adaptation of everyday life: life in war

The war has affected all aspects of Ukrainian life. Many services have adapted to the new conditions. For example, delivery of goods is available even in frontline regions, modern shelters are being built in schools and kindergartens, and you can receive air raid alerts or high threat notifications directly to your smartphone.

For those planning to move to or visit Ukraine, it is important to take into account the specifics of wartime. Migration lawyers of Visit Ukraine will help you with legalisation, obtaining a residence permit and other necessary documents.

Just a reminder. A significant number of Ukrainian citizens are forced to seek temporary protection and settle down in European countries. Read here to findout what Ukrainians miss most and what they lack in European countries.
