Features of traveling to Ukraine in 2025

During martial law, Ukraine entry requirements 2025 require not only a passport and, if necessary, a visa. At the border, border guards can additionally check:

1. The purpose of the trip (hotel reservation, invitation from relatives or partners, confirmation of volunteer activities);

2. The presence of sufficient financial resources for the stay;

3.  Return ticket or a plan to leave Ukraine;

4. Mandatory insurance policy.

Instructions on what to do if you are planning a trip to Ukraine in 2025 are in this article.

Even if you do not need a visa, every foreign tourist is required to have Ukraine medical insurance for foreigners. Moreover, we are not talking about any travel insurance, but about a policy that:

- operates on the territory of Ukraine;

- covers emergency medical expenses;

- is recognized by the Ukrainian border services.

That is why the safest option is to apply for medical insurance in Ukraine online before your arrival. You can do this on the Visit Ukraine portal in just a few minutes, choosing the optimal tariff depending on the duration of your trip.

Who needs a visa and how to get one?

If you are not a citizen of a country with which a visa-free regime has been concluded, then you need to obtain a visa to enter Ukraine.

- e-Visa

From February 2025, citizens of 42 countries can again apply for an e-Visa to Ukraine. An electronic visa is issued completely online - there is no need to visit a Ukrainian embassy or consulate. It is issued for a short-term stay of up to 30 days and with a single or double entry.

The purpose of the visit for which an electronic visa can be issued: tourism, business, private visit, medical treatment, journalism, attending cultural, sports, educational or scientific events.

According to the data of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, e-Visa is available for citizens of the following countries: Commonwealth of the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Plurinational State of Bolivia, Kingdom of Bhutan, Republic of Vanuatu, Republic of Haiti, Republic of Guatemala, Republic of Honduras, Dominican Republic, Republic of India, Republic of Indonesia, Kingdom of Cambodia, People's Republic of China, Republic of Kiribati, Republic of Costa Rica, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Republic of Mauritius, Malaysia, Republic of Maldives, United Mexican States, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Republic of Nauru, Federated Democratic Republic of Nepal, Republic of Nicaragua, Republic of Palau, Republic of South Africa, Republic of El Salvador, Independent State of Samoa, Republic of Seychelles, Saint Lucia, Republic of Singapore, Solomon Islands, Republic of Suriname, Kingdom of Thailand, Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Republic of Fiji, Republic of the Philippines, Jamaica.

Step-by-step instructions on how foreigners can obtain an e-Visa to enter Ukraine in this article.

- Visa to Ukraine

If your country does not have the right to visa-free entry or to issue an e-Visa to enter Ukraine, you need to apply for a regular visa at the Embassy or Consulate of Ukraine in the country of residence.

The main types of Ukrainian visas for foreigners:

- Short-term visa (type C). This visa allows you to stay in Ukraine for up to 90 days within 180 days. It can be single-, double- or multiple-entry, depending on the needs of the applicant. Type C is usually issued for tourism, business trips (subtype C-01), private visits (subtype C-02), medical treatment and work of media representatives.

- Long-term visa (type D). It is issued for those who plan long-term or permanent residence in Ukraine. Such a visa gives the right to stay for more than 90 days and is mandatory for obtaining a temporary or permanent residence permit.

Work, study and family visas. These are the most common categories of long-term visas. They are issued for a period of up to 90 days with the possibility of multiple entries. For stays of more than 90 days, a residence permit must be issued upon arrival.

- Transit visa. Intended for foreigners planning to transit through Ukraine to another country. It can be single-entry (up to 5 days) or double- or multiple-entry (up to a year), provided that each stay in Ukraine does not exceed 5 days.

In complex cases (long-term stay, work, study, family reunification), it is better to use the help of migration lawyers in Ukraine. Specialists will help you prepare documents correctly and avoid refusal.

You can get advice from a migration lawyer directly on the Visit Ukraine portal.

What documents are required to enter Ukraine?

Foreign tourists must have the following to cross the border of Ukraine:

- Passport. The document must be valid for the entire period of stay in Ukraine. Citizens of Turkey and Georgia can enter Ukraine by presenting only their ID cards.

- Visa. This document is required only if otherwise provided by law or a visa-free regime is not established with the country.

- Confirmation of the purpose of the trip (document confirming family ties, invitation from a citizen of Ukraine, invitation to participate in conferences or other events, booked tour, hotel reservation, etc.).

Ban on entry to Ukraine: what are the reasons and how to appeal?

- Confirmation of sufficient funds for the entire period of stay in Ukraine and for return to the country of origin. To confirm the availability of sufficient financial support, it is enough to present: cash in hryvnia or other convertible foreign currency, bank cards, ATM statements and checks, a letter of guarantee from the host party about assuming obligations to pay all expenses of the foreigner related to his stay in Ukraine and departure outside its borders, confirmation of booking or payment for accommodation and meals, a contract for tourist services (voucher, travel ticket), a travel ticket for return to the country of permanent residence or to a third country with a fixed date.

This article describes how to confirm financial capacity when entering Ukraine.

- An insurance policy issued by an insurance company registered in Ukraine or a foreign insurance company that has a representative office in Ukraine or contractual relations (assistance).

Safety while traveling to Ukraine is the number one priority. Special medical insurance with coverage of war risks will provide you with access to quality medical care in any situation.

Take care of your health and peace of mind, get travel insurance now!

Is it possible to enter Ukraine without a visa, but for another purpose - for example, for volunteering or work?

It is worth remembering that the visa-free regime in Ukraine is valid only for tourist and short-term visits. That is, the ability to stay for 90 days without a visa does not mean the right to official employment or long-term volunteering.

For work, study, family reunification or volunteering, a long-term visa (type D) and subsequent receipt of a residence permit are required. Violation of the rules of stay may lead to fines, a ban on entry and difficulties in the future.

In such cases, it is worth consulting in advance with professional migration lawyers in Ukraine, who will help you properly prepare documents, apply for the necessary visa or permit and avoid legal problems.

The Visit Ukraine portal offers a full range of legal support for foreigners - from consultations to support in visa and migration matters.

Ukraine in 2025 remains open to foreigners, but every traveler should remember the current entry rules: whether a visa is required, what documents are required, and requirements for medical insurance with war risk coverage.

Before traveling, do not forget to arrange insurance in advance and, if necessary, seek legal assistance from professional migration lawyers.
