Planning to visit
Ukraine in 2025? Whether you're a foreign traveler exploring Eastern Europe or a Ukrainian citizen returning home, knowing how to get to Ukraine efficiently and safely is essential. With direct flights still limited, many travelers choose to travel to Ukraine via Poland, cross the border to Ukraine from Slovakia, take a bus to Ukraine from Hungary, or arrange a transfer to Ukraine from Moldova.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through the best routes into Ukraine, transport options, border crossing procedures, and must-have documents.

About the rules of entry into Ukraine in 2025 – read here.

How can a foreigner move to live in Ukraine? Told here.

Can you enter Ukraine now in 2025?

Yes, you can enter Ukraine in 2025, but there are some important things to know. Despite ongoing military risks in certain regions, Ukraine’s western borders remain open to both Ukrainian citizens and foreign nationals.

The most frequently used land border crossings in 2025 include:

- Poland–Ukraine: Medyka–Shehyni, Korczowa–Krakovets, Hrebenne–Rava-Ruska

- Slovakia–Ukraine: Vyšné Nemecké–Uzhhorod

- Hungary–Ukraine: Záhony–Chop, Lónya–Dzvinkove

- Moldova–Ukraine: Palanca–Maiaky–Udobne, Otaci–Mohyliv-Podilskyi

Crossing from Belarus and Russia is restricted, with some exceptions for Ukrainians returning from temporarily occupied territories.

Is it safe to travel to Ukraine now?

Most regions in western and central Ukraine are relatively safe for travel, especially cities like Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, and Kyiv. However, missile threat warnings may still occur “Air Alert” (App Store | Google Play). Travelers should stay informed about regional security updates and avoid frontline areas.

Who is allowed to enter?

Entry into Ukraine is permitted to Ukrainian citizens and foreigners who meet certain conditions, in particular, have valid travel documents and are not banned from entering.

- Ukrainian citizens can enter if they have a foreign passport, diplomatic or service passport, seafarer's or crew member's ID card.

- Foreigners must have a valid passport document, visa (if required), confirmation of the purpose of stay and sufficient financial means. Representatives of most countries can enter Ukraine without a visa for a period of up to 90 days if the purpose of the trip is tourism, visiting relatives, doing business or for humanitarian reasons. At the border, confirmation of the purpose of such a trip, as well as a health insurance policy, will be required.

What documents can foreigners use to be on the territory of Ukraine during a war? Read here.

How to enter Ukraine: routes through neighboring countries

Crossing the border from Poland to Ukraine

- Korczowa–Krakovets.

- Hrebenne–Rava-Ruska

Entry via Russia and Belarus

In 2025, how to get to Ukraine via Russia or Belarus is a question with a very limited and specific answer: for most travelers, these routes are closed.

Current status of the borders

- Russia–Ukraine border: All official checkpoints remain closed for international travel. Only select crossing points may operate in limited capacity for Ukrainian citizens returning from temporarily occupied territories (TOT).

- Belarus-Ukraine border: The border also remains effectively closed since the start of the full-scale invasion.

Who can cross the border with Russia and Belarus?

Only Ukrainian citizens returning from Russia or Belarus may be allowed to cross the border through designated checkpoints, such as humanitarian corridors, under a special procedure.

Entry for tourists, foreign nationals, and other categories of travelers is prohibited.

A complete list of checkpoints on the Ukrainian border is in this article.

What do you need to enter Ukraine?

Citizens of Ukraine

- You can enter without a visa with a standard international passport, diplomatic, service passport, etc.

- If the validity period expires, the passport can be extended for 5 years at the embassy or consulate of Ukraine during martial law.

- Those who left without a passport or with an internal document can apply to a diplomatic mission abroad and receive a Certificate of Return.

Foreign citizens

When entering Ukraine, foreigners must have:

- A valid international passport, and at least one blank page. For citizens of Turkey and Georgia, an ID card can be used instead of a passport.

- If the country is not on the visa-free list, a visa or e-visa is required (countries can issue an electronic visa online - up to 30 days).

- Documents confirming the purpose of the trip - invitation, reservation, medical assistance, study, etc.

- Insurance.

- Sufficient financial support – often $45 per day or equivalent.

- No official entry ban.

All documents in English or with an official translation for border guards.

Medical insurance is mandatory for all foreigners entering Ukraine. It is not just a formality, but an important security measure, especially in times of martial law and unforeseen situations. Insurance will ensure you access to the necessary medical care, which is critically important in case of illness or injury.

Travel tips for Ukraine

- Use offline maps: Cellular coverage may vary; download offline maps via Google Maps (App Store | Google Play).

- Emergency contacts: Keep emergency numbers and embassy contacts handy just in case.

- Language: Ukrainian is the official language, English is spoken in major cities and tourist areas.

- Respect local customs, curfews, and listen to air raid warnings (App Store | Google Play). When the app alerts you to danger, stop all activities and immediately head to the nearest shelter.

Is it safe to drive your own car to Ukraine?

Yes, many travelers and returning Ukrainians travel to Ukraine by their own transport. However, it is important to be aware of current road conditions, insurance requirements and safety considerations.

Road conditions in 2025

The road infrastructure in Ukraine is gradually improving, especially on the main highways connecting the border regions with cities such as Lviv, Kyiv and Odesa. However:

- Some rural roads and regional routes may still be in poor condition.

- Construction and repair work is ongoing in many areas.

- GPS navigation is reliable, but always check for real-time traffic and safety updates before setting off.

- You should also avoid driving near military zones or temporarily occupied territories.

Do you need insurance to drive a car?

Of course. To legally enter Ukraine by car, you need to have the following:

- Valid Green Card insurance (recognized international car insurance) or local Ukrainian car insurance. In particular, it is recommended to take out Mini CASCO insurance, which offers protection against:

- Accident damage

- Natural disasters

- War-related risks and loss of vehicles

You can easily purchase Mini CASCO through the Visit Ukraine car insurance platform. The policy is flexible, affordable and designed specifically for foreign vehicles traveling in Ukraine.

Car safety at night

Leaving your car unattended overnight in an unfamiliar area can be a threat. Here are some tips:

- Park in safe, well-lit areas, ideally near hotels or official parking lots.

- Avoid leaving valuables inside the car.

- Use a steering wheel lock or car alarm for added protection.

- In cities, use paid, secure parking lots whenever possible.

Driving your own car gives you flexibility and freedom, but be sure to prepare in advance and stay up-to-date on regional safety warnings.
