How can Ukrainians travel through Romania?
Due to restrictions on air travel in Ukraine because of the war, neighboring countries — especially Romania, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary — have become popular places to cross the border and continue your trip. Bucharest Airport is convenient for passengers from southern Ukraine — Odesa, Chernivtsi, and Vinnytsia regions — as well as for those who are already in Romania or Moldova. By the way, we described in detail how to get to the airport in Romania from Ukraine in a previous article.
To avoid wasting time at the border and risking being denied entry to the EU, we recommend that you pay attention to the following details when planning your trip:
1. If you are traveling by car, don't forget your Green Card (mandatory international car insurance) and a vehicle inspection certificate, which is required for entry into Romania. You can apply for a Green Card online at the Visit Ukraine portal. For more information on crossing the Ukraine-Romania border and mandatory vehicle inspection, please refer to the previous article.
2. Check the validity of your passport, as you may be denied entry to the EU if it has expired (for information on how long your passport must be valid to travel abroad, please follow the link). To travel without a visa, you need a biometric passport; if you have a regular passport, you need a visa.
3. Make sure you have proof of the purpose of your trip and sufficient funds, as well as travel insurance — border guards may check this when you cross the border. You can buy inexpensive insurance online at Visit Ukraine.
We remind you! In July and August 2025, traffic will be restricted on the bridge in Solotvyno on the border with Romania. Read our previous article to find out which checkpoints will remain open, how to avoid queues, and what you need to have with you for your trip.
