Medical insurance is an important element of a safe and legal trip to the Schengen area. It is not only a mandatory requirement when opening visas, but also protects you in unforeseen situations - from illnesses to accidents.

In this article, we will take a detailed look at who needs to take out insurance for entry to Slovenia, which policies are suitable for different types of trips and where it is most convenient to purchase the necessary protection.

Be ready for your trip – informed, protected and confident!

Planning a trip to Finland? Make sure you have reliable insurance.

Who needs insurance for entry to Slovenia?

According to the current legislation of Slovenia, the requirements for medical insurance for entry to the country depend on the citizenship of the person and the purpose of their stay.

For whom is medical insurance mandatory for entry to Slovenia?

According to official sources, health insurance for entry into Slovenia is mandatory for the following categories of persons:

Schengen tourist visa applicants

If you apply for a Schengen visa, for example if your trip is longer than 90 days, you are required to provide proof of valid and adequate travel health insurance.

This insurance must cover any costs that may arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, emergency medical care, hospitalization or death during your stay in the Schengen area. The minimum coverage is usually 30,000 euros.

Convenient routes from Ukraine to Slovenia, entry rules and useful tips in this article.

Students

Foreign students are required to have health insurance with a coverage of at least 30,000 euros to obtain a visa or residence permit in Slovenia. The policy must include emergency care, hospitalization and repatriation, be valid throughout the Schengen area and cover the entire period of the initial stay in the country (usually 3 to 6 months). The document must be in English or Slovenian, or have an official translation. Some universities also require extended coverage, so it is worth clarifying the conditions with the chosen educational institution in advance.

After obtaining a residence permit, the student can join the state insurance through ZZZS.

Work visa

To obtain a work visa or residence permit in Slovenia, the applicant must provide health insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros. The policy must cover emergency care, hospitalization and repatriation. It must be valid at the time of submission of documents and be valid at least until the conclusion of an employment contract or the acquisition of the right to state insurance. A translation into English or Slovenian is also required.

Slovenia is a small country in the heart of Europe, famous for its high quality of life, beautiful nature, rich culture and promising economy. Read here what is required to obtain a residence permit in Slovenia in 2025.

- Refugees from Ukraine who have received temporary protection

Persons who have arrived in Slovenia from Ukraine and have received temporary protection have the right to access state healthcare services after registering with the municipality. However, in the period before receiving registration and access to these services, it may be recommended to have temporary insurance or be aware of the possibilities of receiving emergency care.

For whom is health insurance for entry into Slovenia desirable?

According to official recommendations and common practice, health insurance for entry into Slovenia is desirable (strongly recommended) for all categories of persons who are not subject to mandatory insurance requirements, but seek to ensure their financial security and access to medical care in case of unforeseen circumstances.

Citizens of countries with a visa-free regime with the Schengen area

Although they do not need a Schengen visa and, accordingly, mandatory insurance is not required to obtain a visa, any medical services in Slovenia (as in any other EU country) are paid for by non-resident foreigners. The cost of treatment can be very high. Health insurance will cover the costs of emergency care, outpatient treatment, hospitalization and, if necessary, medical repatriation.

Short-term visitors who have not yet gained full access to the Finnish healthcare system

Even if you plan to gain access to Finnish public healthcare services later, for example after obtaining temporary protection, it is highly recommended to have private health insurance during the initial period of your stay (before you officially register with the municipality and receive social security). It will cover the costs of healthcare until you gain full access to the public system.

What medical care is provided to holders of temporary protection in Slovenia?

Persons with temporary protection are entitled to emergency medical care, including hospitalization, emergency dentistry, transportation (including “ambulance”), treatment of chronic diseases and necessary specialized procedures in hospitals – this is guaranteed after receiving a temporary protection card, which is issued within three days of applying to the police or administrative service. The cost of such services is covered by the state through the Office for Support and Integration of Migrants

After obtaining the status, the person is issued a certificate for access to these services, and treatment in medical institutions is provided free of charge. Emergency prescription medications, psychological support, women's health services (contraception, prenatal care, pregnancy) and regular medical check-ups for children and students are also available. If necessary, the Committee can be contacted to expand the scope of free medical care – for example, to cover manual or psychotherapeutic services .

Asylum seekers in Slovenia

Have the right to free emergency medical care, including treatment of acute conditions, dentistry, and pregnancy care. Children and students under 26 years of age receive full medical care. Basic medical care is available in shelters.

Refugees and persons with international protection

Receive state health insurance (ZZZS) with full coverage - outpatient care, doctors, hospitalization, prescriptions. The costs are covered by the state.

Which car insurance policy should you choose to enter Slovenia?

If you are planning a trip to Slovenia by car, you will definitely need a "Green Card". This international insurance policy confirms your civil liability in the event of an accident caused by you on the territory of Slovenia and covers damages to the victims.

Before traveling, make sure that your "Green Card" is valid for Slovenia and covers the entire period of your stay. If you do not have it or it is invalid, you will have to buy insurance directly at the border, which is usually more expensive and less convenient. It is better to take care of the "Green Card" in advance!

We have already told you whether Ukrainians need to take out a local civil motor vehicle policy in Slovenia.

General requirements for insurance policies for short-term and long-term trips

What requirements should an insurance policy meet for a trip to Slovenia?

When planning a trip to Slovenia, it is important to take out an insurance policy in advance that meets the established requirements. Here are the main criteria:

- Minimum coverage amount

The insurance coverage must be at least 30,000 euros. This amount must cover: emergency medical care, emergency hospitalization, repatriation to your homeland for medical reasons or in the event of death.

- Policy validity

The insurance must be valid for the entire period of your planned stay or transit through the territory of Slovenia. Including if you are taking out a policy to obtain a residence permit.

- Coverage area

The policy must be valid on the territory of Slovenia. If you are traveling with a Schengen visa or plan to move around the Schengen countries, make sure that the insurance covers the entire Schengen area.

- Deductible

It is recommended to choose a policy without a deductible - this means that the insurance company will fully cover all expenses without additional payments from your side.

Important! Make sure that the insurance does not contain exclusions related to repatriation or emergency medical care. These points are vital in critical situations.

What insurance can you get for Slovenia?

It is best to arrange medical insurance for a trip to Slovenia in advance, while still in Ukraine. This is not only convenient, but also helps to avoid additional costs and misunderstandings abroad. Here are some reasons why:

- Limited coverage of local policies

Insurance already taken out in Slovenia is usually valid only within this country and does not cover trips to other Schengen countries. This can be a problem if you plan to travel around Europe.

- Higher cost

Local insurance policies are usually more expensive, especially if they are taken out by foreigners upon arrival.

- Language and bureaucratic barrier

Applying insurance on the spot can be complicated by language difficulties or specific conditions of local insurance companies, which are not always understandable to newcomers.
