On Tuesday, the Latvian government decided to reallocate €984,200 so that the State Employment Agency (NVA) could provide one-off start-up grants for employment or self-employment to 1,330 Ukrainian citizens. This is part of the programme to integrate Ukrainians into the labour market, which has been in place since the start of the war.

How to get assistance?

Assistance for starting employment is available from 7 March 2022, and assistance for starting self-employment is available from 3 October 2022. To receive assistance, you must submit an application to the State Employment Agency (NVA) within one month of starting employment. Support is provided only once and is paid on the basis of the application submitted.

Amount of assistance

The amount of assistance is equal to one minimum monthly wage in the country — 740 euros. It is important to note that this amount is not subject to personal income tax.

Statistics on assistance received

To date, 17,180 Ukrainian citizens have received assistance to start work, and 637 people have received assistance to start self-employment. This programme has become an important tool for supporting Ukrainian refugees, helping them to adapt to their new life in Latvia.

The Latvian Ministry of Social Affairs reports that the programme to support Ukrainian citizens is mainly financed from the Latvian state budget. This underlines the country's serious approach to helping refugees and ensuring their integration in their new home.
