Despite the fact that full peace has not yet been achieved in Ukraine, the Czech government is already preparing for changes that may occur after the cessation of active hostilities. This was reported by novinky.cz.

On May 23, Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said at a business forum in Takov that new approaches to accepting Ukrainian citizens, especially war veterans, need to be worked out.

Getting ready for a new wave of migration

The Czech government thinks that after the war ends, more Ukrainian veterans might want to settle in the Czech Republic.

Rakušan stressed that the country must be prepared for such a development, as veterans may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder after any military conflict.

He noted that a system for documenting participation in the war must be created in order to respond effectively to the needs of such individuals.

Changes in temporary protection policy

The minister said that if a long-term ceasefire is achieved — at least three months — the Czech Republic intends to suspend temporary protection status for newly arrived Ukrainian citizens. Rakushan plans to raise this issue in June at a meeting of EU interior ministers in Luxembourg.

For those Ukrainians who are already in the Czech Republic, a transition period will be introduced: they will be able to stay in the country for another year and a half. However, new asylum seekers, including veterans, will undergo the standard procedure for obtaining refugee status with mandatory security checks.

The conditions for family reunification will also be revised and made significantly stricter.

The role of Ukrainians in the Czech economy

As of today, there are about 372,000 Ukrainians with refugee status living in the Czech Republic. Of these, 55% plan to remain in the country, 160,000 are already employed, and another 15,000 are looking for work.

The minister noted that the sudden return of such a large number of people to Ukraine could deal a serious blow to the Czech labor market.

Rakusan also emphasized the positive economic effect of the presence of Ukrainians. According to him, the contribution of this group to the economy already exceeds the amount of social assistance they receive.

In 2024, their contribution to the budget will be twice the amount spent on support, and in two years, the Czech Republic will fully compensate all expenses related to the reception of refugees.
