Insurance for a child travelling abroad: what policy should you take out?

Medical insurance is a mandatory document for a child travelling abroad. The basic package provides financial protection in the following cases:

– medical consultations and diagnostics;

– treatment in case of illness or injury;

– emergency medical care, including hospitalisation;

– prescription of medication;

– transportation to the nearest medical facility;

– emergency dental care.

Extended medical insurance packages may cover COVID-19, accidents, civil liability (for example, if a child accidentally causes harm to third parties) and other insured events.

Important! For European Union countries, the recommended minimum coverage is 30,000 euros. This amount guarantees sufficient protection in most situations that may arise abroad.

How to insure a child before travelling: who can take out a policy?

A medical policy for a child can only be taken out by one of the parents or the official guardian — this is a mandatory legal requirement.

In cases where a child is travelling without their parents, but with a third party (e.g. a grandmother, teacher, acquaintance), the policy is still taken out by the parents. The document must indicate the accompanying person who will be responsible for the child during the trip.

Please note: most insurance policies are only available to persons aged 18 and over, but this does not prevent you from taking out insurance for a child. First, the policy is taken out for an adult (father or mother), and then the child is added as the insured person.

How to take out insurance for a child online on the Visit Ukraine portal?

1. Follow the link.

2. Select an insurance package, taking into account the destination and conditions of the trip.

3. Select the policy period (according to the dates of the trip) and enter the date of birth of the insured person. The system will automatically calculate the cost.

4. Fill in the form with your personal details: full name, email, phone number, passport details, address, tax identification number, country of destination. At this stage, you can add one or more people.

5. Read the terms and conditions and confirm your purchase by entering the code from the email.

6. Pay for the insurance in a way that suits you.

The policy will be sent to your email. You do not need to print it out — the electronic document is legally valid.
