Two-thirds of Ukrainian refugees in the UK have faced serious difficulties, including job loss and problems with renting housing, due to the suspension of visa renewals under the Homes for Ukraine program in February. This was reported by The Telegraph.

Visa problems have led to a deterioration in the financial situation of Ukrainians in the UK

According to the study:

41% of Ukrainian refugees were unable to find a job or get a promotion due to uncertainty about their immigration status;

22% have lost their jobs;

24% have faced difficulties in renewing their lease.

In total, there are about 220 thousand Ukrainian refugees living in the UK who received visas under special programs, including the family scheme and Homes for Ukraine. The latter allowed Ukrainians to live in the country with the support of sponsors with the right to a three-year visa.

Problems with visa extensions and their consequences

The UK government has provided for the possibility of extending these visas for another 18 months, but this process will not be automatic. Starting from February 4, 2025, holders of such visas will be able to apply for an extension to the Home Office, but the review of documents may take several months, which creates additional difficulties for Ukrainian citizens.

A study by the University of Birmingham found that 94% of Ukrainian refugees intend to extend their visas. At the same time, the UK's Office for National Statistics notes that 68% of Ukrainians would like to stay in the country after the war ends.

The delays and bureaucratic difficulties with visa renewals have already led to a deterioration in the financial situation of many Ukrainians in the UK. Job losses and difficulties with renting housing are forcing refugees to look for alternative options, which makes their adaptation in the country much more difficult.
