What is CTPCI and why is it important?

Motor third party liability insurance (MTPL) is a compulsory insurance of civil liability of vehicle owners that is valid throughout Ukraine. This policy is mandatory for all car owners and is a legal requirement under Ukrainian law.

In the event of a road accident, the insurance company covers damages caused to third parties - both material (damage to the car, property) and, if necessary, moral and medical. When do I need to renew my CTPCI?

A standard MTPL policy is issued for a period of one year. Accordingly, it must be renewed before it expires in order not to violate the law and not get a fine. Some drivers take out insurance for a shorter period, for example, for six months, in which case it is important not to miss the expiry date.

But there are other situations when the question arises: do I need to renew my policy?

Change of car owner or number plate

If you have sold a car or purchased a vehicle with a valid insurance policy, according to the current legislation, the policy of compulsory motor third party liability insurance (CMTPL) remains valid. This is because it is not the owner who is insured, but the vehicle itself. In other words, the new owner can use the existing policy until its expiry date.

In addition, if the car's state number plate changes (for example, if it is registered in another region), no reissue of the policy is required. The main identifier in the CMTPL policy is the VIN code.

Changing the driver's passport data

If the car owner's passport details change - for example, after changing the surname during marriage, replacing the passport or in other documents - it is necessary to notify the insurance company and amend the existing policy. The policy does not automatically become invalid, but it must be updated with the correct information.

After an accident

After being involved in a road accident, the policy is not cancelled. If the insurance has not expired, it continues to work. However, if the coverage limit has been completely exhausted or the insurer has terminated the contract for any reason (for example, in case of violation of the terms and conditions), you need to take out new insurance.

How to check the expiry date of car insurance?

You can check your current policy:

▪️ in your personal account on the insurance company's website;

▪️ through the application or the Diia portal;

▪️ using the MTIBU (Motor Transport Insurance Bureau of Ukraine) database by car number or policy number.

What is the penalty for an expired CTPCI?

If the driver is stopped by the police and it turns out that he or she does not have a valid CTPCI, a fine of UAH 425 (within 15 days) or UAH 850 in case of delay may be imposed on him or her.

It is also possible that the vehicle will be towed to the impound lot, especially if the car is involved in an accident without insurance coverage. In addition, in the event of an accident, the culprit will be obliged to compensate the injured party for all losses.
