The 2.5-hour phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and russian president vladimir putin became a central topic of international politics. The leaders discussed ending the war in Ukraine, prisoner exchange, and bilateral relations. Let's take a closer look at the outcome of the talks in this article.
US position: peaceful settlement and stability
According to the White House's official statement, the key topic of the conversation was the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine and the establishment of a dialogue between the parties to the conflict. The leaders agreed that the path to peace would begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on a naval truce in the Black Sea.
“We agreed to an immediate ceasefire on all energy and infrastructure with the understanding that we will work quickly to achieve a full ceasefire and ultimately end this horrific war between russia and Ukraine,” Donald Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social.
Trump also emphasized that during his conversation with putin, many aspects of the peace agreement were discussed, including the deaths of thousands of soldiers. According to him, both vladimir putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy want to end the conflict.
In addition, the White House noted that the stabilization of relations between Washington and moscow will open up opportunities for economic cooperation and global security after peace is achieved.
Russia's position: ceasefire and prisoner exchange
The russian side has stated that a prisoner exchange in the format of 175 for 175 people should take place on March 19. This information was confirmed by official russian media, including TASS.
According to the kremlin, putin supported Trump's initiative to suspend strikes on energy infrastructure for 30 days. Previously, similar talks had already taken place between the parties, but yielded no results.
Russia also announced the creation of expert groups to resolve the conflict. At the same time, putin emphasized the need to monitor the ceasefire and said that an important factor for stability is “stopping forced mobilization” in Ukraine and stopping the supply of Western weapons.
In addition, russian media reports say that putin supports Trump's idea to hold hockey matches between russian and US teams as a “symbol of normalization of relations.”

Ukraine's reaction: cautious optimism
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed a cautious reaction to the results of the talks between Trump and putin. He said that the russian leader continues to use manipulative rhetoric in an attempt to weaken Ukraine by reducing the size of its army.
“This is another weakening of the army. That is, his whole game is to weaken us as much as possible. I believe that our partners will not accept the demand to stop arming Ukraine, because it will weaken our position,” Zelenskyy said.
At the same time, the Ukrainian president confirmed that the exchange of prisoners was indeed planned, and the Ukrainian side was prepared for it in advance. However, Zelenskyy emphasized that a real signal of russia's readiness to end the war would be the return of all Ukrainian prisoners of war without exception.
The phone conversation between Trump and putin demonstrated the desire of both sides to move toward a truce. However, putin's statements about mobilization, arms control, and the cessation of international military aid to Ukraine are worrisome, as they may be part of russia's strategy of pressure.
Ukraine, for its part, maintains a cautious approach and emphasizes that a real end to the war is possible only under fair agreements that guarantee its security. Meanwhile, diplomatic negotiations continue to fight for every point of a possible peace agreement.
