With the onset of spring, nature comes to life and more and more colours appear around us: buds open on tree branches and the first flowers emerge from the ground. There are many beautiful places in Ukraine where you can enjoy the blooming of primroses and more - from snowdrops and crocuses to sakura and roses. Below you will find a selection of locations and useful tips on when and where to go to see all this splendour.
Snowdrops
Ichnia National Park, Chernihiv region
One of the most famous places to observe snowdrops is the Ichnia National Nature Park. It was created with the aim of preserving and restoring forest-steppe plants, so you can really find many rare flowers here. The flowering period of snowdrops most often begins in late winter or early March - the exact timing depends on weather conditions.
Don't forget that snowdrops are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine and their collection is prohibited by law. It's best to take a camera and take away beautiful pictures without disturbing the natural balance.
Crocuses (saffron)
Carpathians
Crocuses, often called saffron, bloom in the Carpathians for just a couple of weeks in early spring, when the snow melts. This usually happens towards the middle of March. These fragile flowers are also listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, so it's important not to pick them, but to admire and photograph them.
Where to look for the most picturesque crocus fields? Pay attention to the following places:
- Kolochava village,
- Dragobrat mountain,
- Borzhava Valley,
- Mount Pip Ivan,
- Berezynka arboretum near Mukachevo.

Sakura
Uzhhorod and Mukachevo, Zakarpattia region
Sakura blossoms are a real spectacle that is traditionally associated with Japan. But there are places in Ukraine where you can admire the pink petals of these trees. The most famous region is Transcarpathia: in Uzhhorod and Mukachevo, sakura trees begin to bloom from mid-April to mid-May.
In Uzhhorod, the trees were imported from Europe in the last century, and in Mukachevo, sakura trees were planted en masse during the years of independence. A traditional event during the sakura blossom season in Uzhhorod is the Sakura Fest festival, which hosts concerts, exhibitions, competitions, sporting events, and new trees are planted.
Tulips
Kherson region, Kropyvnytskyi, Chernivtsi region
Tulips bloom in Ukraine from mid-April to mid-May. For those who dream of seeing entire fields covered in bright colours, you can go
- to the arboretum in Kropyvnytskyi,
- to the village of Mamayevtsi (Chernivtsi region),
- to the village of Lyubymivka (Kherson region).
For residents and visitors of Kyiv, it is interesting to visit the Singing Field: every year, towards the end of April, an exhibition of tulips is also opened there.
Daffodils
Khust village, Zakarpattia region
The Narcissus Valley near the city of Khust (Zakarpattia region) is considered a unique natural attraction and is protected by UNESCO. White daffodils bloom over a vast area from late April to mid-May, giving the local landscape a fabulous look. In order not to disturb the ecosystem of the protected area, it is important for guests to follow all the rules: do not pick flowers, do not trample fields and respect the surrounding nature.
Cockerels (wild irises)
The village of Snitkiv in Vinnytsia region, Tuzly Estuaries Park in Odesa region
Wild irises, often called irises, bloom for only one or two weeks in late May. The largest valley of yellow cockerels can be seen in the Vinnytsia region near the village of Snitkiv. Another striking place is the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park in Odesa Oblast, where wild irises come in a wide variety of shades. They grow in small groups in the steppe zone of the park.
Lilac
Dykanka village, Poltava region
On the outskirts of the village of Dykanka (Poltava region) there is a real lilac grove. Flowering begins at the end of May and can last until mid-summer - the specific timing depends on the type of lilac. An interesting detail: this place used to be a clay quarry, which was closed in the XIX century. Over time, a lilac grove grew in its place, becoming one of the natural attractions of the region.
Roses
Sofiyivka Park in Uman, Cherkasy region
Those who want to finish the spring (or rather, almost summer) flower marathon should visit the Sofiyivka dendrological park in Uman. In early June, roses - more than 150 species - begin to bloom here. The Sofiyivka rose garden is considered to be one of the largest in Ukraine, and its flowering period lasts almost all summer.
