The Spanish government has officially extended the validity of foreigners' cards for Ukrainians who have been granted temporary protection due to the war. According to the data posted on the portal of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, all previously issued certificates will be valid until 4 March 2026. This means that Ukrainian refugees do not need to apply for new documents: their existing cards remain valid.

Details of the decision

The extension of the validity of the certificates is aimed at simplifying the lives of displaced persons and providing them with a stable legal status in Spain. Since the first days of the conflict, the country's authorities have launched an emergency refugee reception programme, and today Spain has become one of the EU leaders in terms of the number of temporary protection permits issued.

Over the three years of the war, 236,570 people have been granted asylum in Spain, which is 4.9% of the total number of refugees from Ukraine across the EU. Four CREADE centres have been set up in Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante and Malaga to provide prompt assistance to them, where more than 214,000 Ukrainians have already received support.

Investing in integration

Spain has provided housing for 40,597 Ukrainian citizens under the international and temporary protection programme. To ensure the full integration of refugees into society, the government has invested €1.53 billion, part of which came from EU funds. These funds were allocated to:

- Provision of housing;

- Social support;

- Education and vocational training.

There are 39,741 children from Ukraine studying in Spanish schools, and 1,800 Ukrainian students have entered universities. In addition, 28,197 people entered the local labour market and found jobs in construction, trade and IT. More than 91,000 refugees have already been integrated into the country's healthcare system.

New assistance centre - the House of Ukraine

One of the latest steps in the support plan was the opening of the House of Ukraine in Torrevieja, a centre of assistance and integration for refugees. This project will be part of the international network of Unity Hubs and will provide a wide range of services: from legal advice to organising educational and cultural events.
