Sony Computer Science Laboratory has conducted a large-scale study, analysing data from more than 10,000 cities, and identified the most comfortable places for walking. As a result, it turned out that Lviv was the only Ukrainian city to make it into the ranking, taking 27th place. This was announced by Mayor Andriy Sadovyi.

How the study was conducted

Scientists took into account how long it takes residents of different districts of the city to get to key infrastructure facilities on foot - schools, hospitals, restaurants and shops. Based on the data obtained, the average indicator for each city was calculated.

Lviv in the ranking

Lviv topped the Ukrainian list - or rather, it was the only city on it - and moved up to 27th position in the global ranking. According to Andriy Sadovyi, on average, Lviv residents spend about 10 minutes walking to the nearest school, medical facility, shop or restaurant.

It is noteworthy that Lviv, which took the 27th place, has beaten such cities as London, Prague and Madrid, which are lower on the list.

Leaders and outsiders

Milan took the top spot in the ranking. It is followed by Copenhagen and Turin, both of which are recognised as one of the most pedestrian-friendly cities in Europe.

Wroclaw, Taichung and Tokyo are at the bottom of the list.

The authors of the study note that, according to the data collected, 45 of the 50 most comfortable cities for walking (with a population of more than half a million people) are located in Europe.

‘European cities have become the most favourable for pedestrians. In the ranking of large cities (with a population of more than half a million people), 45 of the 50 best cities for pedestrians are located in Europe. Milan was the first. On average, a Milanese needs to walk for only 7 minutes to get to the most important sites,’ the study says.
