The European Union is considering revising the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, which prohibits countries from refusing asylum to international protection seekers and deporting refugees. This step could be one of the biggest changes in European migration policy in decades, The Times writes.

Reasons for revising the Convention

The 1951 Convention enshrines the principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits countries from deporting people to countries where their life or freedom is threatened.

However, according to EU representatives, this document no longer corresponds to modern realities.

Over the past decade, Europe has faced a large-scale flow of migrants, which creates difficulties in processing asylum applications and deporting those who have been rejected.

In 2024 alone, more than a million asylum applications were filed in the EU, which has caused growing discontent among the population and contributed to the rise of nationalist and radical populist parties.

Current initiatives and proposals

The EU is already developing a plan to revise the Convention. In particular, it is considering the possibility of creating centers for migrants who are not eligible for asylum outside the EU. This proposal has received support from the European Commission and some member states. For example, Italy is already implementing a similar project in Albania.

In addition, the leaders of the 27 EU member states call for the rapid implementation of new rules on the deportation of migrants and emphasize the need for joint efforts to reduce illegal migration.

A new draft law is proposed to simplify and speed up the process of returning migrants to their countries of origin.

Possible consequences and challenges

The revision of the Convention may have significant implications for EU migration policy. On the one hand, it may help reduce the burden on countries that receive the largest number of migrants and increase the efficiency of the asylum system. On the other hand, there are concerns about possible violations of human rights and the principle of non-refoulement.

In addition, some EU member states are already implementing changes in their migration policies. For example, Germany plans to reduce social benefits for able-bodied refugees who refuse to take up employment, and the Czech Republic is introducing a new type of residence permit for refugees.
