The lower house of the Czech parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, has approved the Lex Ukraine VII package of laws in the third reading. These laws provide for the extension of temporary protection for Ukrainians seeking asylum in the Czech Republic until 31 March 2025. The decision allows Ukrainian refugees to continue to enjoy the support of the Czech state for another year.

According to Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakusan, all Ukrainians living in the country are required to register electronically by mid-March 2025. This is necessary to ensure the security and transparency of the process: only registered Ukrainians will be able to apply for assistance from the Czech state. Rakusan noted that proper registration is a key task for both Ukrainians and the Czech Republic.

The procedure for adopting the law

The adopted draft law now needs to be discussed in the Czech Senate, which is scheduled for one of the first meetings in January 2024. Once approved by the Senate, the document will be signed by the President of the Czech Republic.

Opportunities for long-term residence

Ukrainians who work steadily in the Czech Republic and do not receive state aid have additional prospects. They can apply for a special long-term residence permit. After five years of residence under such conditions, Ukrainians will be able to apply for permanent residence in the country.

How long will temporary protection in the Czech Republic be extended?

Minister Rakusan also stated that temporary protection will be terminated when the war ends or a ceasefire is reached in Ukraine. According to him, the Czech Republic is acting in coordination with other EU countries, including Poland, which will assume the presidency of the EU Council in 2024.

The Czech Republic is currently home to about 380,000 Ukrainians who fled the war. However, no increase in the number of new arrivals was recorded before the start of winter. Earlier, the European Union decided to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians until the end of March 2026, which allows EU member states to coordinate their actions under this initiative.

Temporary protection in the Czech Republic

As you know, holders of this status can count on financial assistance and benefits. In particular, Ukrainians residing in the Czech Republic who have temporary protection can count on financial assistance.

In addition, holders of temporary protection have the following rights

- freedom of movement and residence in the Czech Republic;

- right to move: temporary protection allows you to

free movement within the Schengen area.

- residence and work permits.

- Social assistance: persons who do not have sufficient means can benefit from specialised social services.

- medical care: beneficiaries have full free access to the state health insurance system.
