Ukraine is making significant progress in the process of joining the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), an important step toward European integration. National Bank of Ukraine Governor Andriy Pyshnyi confirmed the progress in this direction after a meeting with European Commissioner Valdis Dobrovskis in Vilnius.
“We see the full support of the European Commission for the successful completion of all stages,” he summarized.
What is SEPA: a mechanism for simplifying European payments
SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a unique payment system that completely unifies money transfers in euros. The first changes within this system officially came into force in January 2008.
The main feature of SEPA is the complete elimination of differences between domestic and international payments in euros. In other words, it is a tool for uniting national markets of different countries into a “single home market”. Thus, SEPA can be called a simpler, faster and cheaper version of SWIFT, specially created for the euro area.

Strategic advantages of Ukraine's accession to SEPA
Joining the Single Euro Payments Area will have a systemic positive impact on the Ukrainian economy:
1. Simplified access to the European market
Ukrainian companies will have a much simpler mechanism for conducting financial transactions in the European Union. Additional bureaucratic and technical barriers that currently complicate international payments will disappear.
2. Development of the fintech industry
Domestic financial technology companies will have much better conditions for entering the European financial services market. This will open up new opportunities for innovation and attracting European investment.
3. Cheaper money transfers
Joining SEPA will significantly reduce the cost of money transfers between Ukraine and the European Union. This will be beneficial for both businesses and individuals.
Current state of the negotiation process
According to Andriy Pyshnyi, Ukraine is fully supported by the European Commission. Successful completion of all stages of the national legislation screening demonstrates the seriousness of our country's intentions and readiness to meet European standards.
Although the exact timeline for full accession to SEPA has not yet been determined, the progress is obvious. Each next step brings Ukraine closer to full integration into the European financial area.
Joining the Single Euro Payments Area is not just a technical procedure, but an important strategic step that confirms Ukraine's European development vector.
