Starting January 1, 2025, fundamentally new rules for importing cars will come into force in Ukraine, which will significantly transform the imported vehicle market. According to Telegraf, this innovation, which has been repeatedly postponed due to martial law, is intended to improve environmental standards and the quality of cars on Ukrainian roads.

Key regulatory changes in the rules for importing cars to Ukraine

While previously it was possible to import passenger cars complying with the Euro 2 environmental standard (manufactured after 1996), starting from 1 January 2025 only Euro 6 cars (manufactured after 2015) will be allowed.

Types of vehicles affected by the restrictions:

The new rules apply to:

● Tractors for semi-trailers;

● Buses

● Trucks;

● Special equipment (cranes, tow trucks, etc.)

● New passenger cars that are being registered for the first time.

What are the exceptions to the new rules?

First of all, the exceptions apply to owners of used cars: used cars that have already been in operation and registered are not subject to the new rules. Ukrainians will continue to be able to bring in used cars manufactured after 1996 (Euro 2).

In addition, the new restrictions will not apply to three categories of vehicles:

● Electric vehicles, as they do not have an internal combustion engine;

● Cars imported as humanitarian aid;

● Vehicles for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Compulsory car insurance in Ukraine

Don't forget, CTPCI is a compulsory insurance for cars with Ukrainian registration in Ukraine. Every car imported into the country must be insured - it's a legal requirement, and not having a policy can lead to significant fines and problems in the event of an accident.
