St. Nicholas Day is not only a bright day in the calendar, but also a deep history, rich symbolism and warm traditions that unite Ukrainians of all generations. It is celebrated on December 6, paying tribute to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, one of the most revered saints in the Christian world.
Historical roots of the holiday
St. Nicholas was born in 270 in the city of Patara, in what is now Turkey, to a wealthy Christian family. At a young age, he devoted his life to serving God and people. As bishop of the city of Myra (modern-day Demre), St. Nicholas became famous for his mercy, justice, and miracles.
His life was full of good deeds: St. Nicholas helped the poor, freed the innocent, and supported travelers and sailors. One of the most famous legends tells how he secretly left gold in a poor man's house to save his daughters from a difficult fate. It was this story that started the tradition of gift-giving associated with the holiday.
After his death, St. Nicholas was canonized, and his cult spread throughout the Christian world. In 1087, the relics of the saint were transferred to the city of Bari (Italy), where they are still kept today.

St. Nicholas in the Ukrainian tradition
The cult of St. Nicholas came to Ukraine with Christianity in the tenth century. He quickly became one of the most beloved saints because he symbolized protection, help, and kindness. Ukrainians revered St. Nicholas as the patron saint of children, the poor, travelers, and farmers who turned to him with prayers for a good harvest.
The holiday occupied a special place in the folk calendar. It has long been believed that on this day nature prepares for winter: “St. Nicholas has come - sit and swallow,” hinting at the cold season.
The traditions of celebration
1. Gifts under the pillow
This tradition is one of the most favorite among children. On the eve of the holiday children write letters to St. Nicholas telling him about their good deeds and desired gifts. On the morning of December 6, they find gifts under their pillows, and sometimes a cane if they have been naughty.
2. Charity.
St. Nicholas Day has always been associated with helping those in need. In ancient times, people used to visit orphans, the poor and the sick on this day, giving them gifts. Today, charity events held on this day have become a good tradition in many cities of Ukraine.
3. Theatrical performances
Particularly popular among children are festive performances where St. Nicholas himself comes to the kids, gives them gifts and reminds them of the importance of good deeds.
4. Religious rituals
Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches hold solemn services. Many churches have icons of St. Nicholas, to which believers come to pray for health, protection on the road, and well-being.
5. Folk customs
In some regions of Ukraine, St. Nicholas Day was associated with ritual songs. Boys and girls would sing carols, wishing their hosts prosperity and health.
