What is motor third party liability insurance?

Motor third party liability insurance (MTPL) is a compulsory type of insurance for all drivers in Ukraine. This policy protects the financial interests of the car owner in the event of an accident. Instead of compensating the injured party on their own, the insurance company will pay the damages within the established limits. Motor third party liability insurance is an important tool of protection for both the culprit and the injured party, as it guarantees compensation for damaged property or personal injury.

However, it is important to keep in mind the limitations of insurance payments under motor third party liability: the maximum amount of compensation for the repair of a damaged car is UAH 250,000. In cases where the driver's health has been affected, the payout limit increases to UAH 500,000. If actual damages exceed these amounts, the difference will have to be paid by the person who caused the accident.

According to the Law of Ukraine ‘On Compulsory Insurance of Civil Liability of Owners of Land Vehicles’, motor third party liability insurance is mandatory for all vehicles in the country. Failure to comply with this requirement is subject to fines.
