Do Ukrainians need a car insurance policy in Slovenia?

For Ukrainians making short-term trips to Slovenia, the Green Card acts as an analogue of a CTP policy. This is an international car insurance system that covers the driver's liability to third parties in the event of an accident. If you already have a valid Green Card, you do not need to apply for a Slovenian policy for a limited period of time.

How to apply for a Green Card?

You can apply for a Green Card online before travelling abroad. It is important to make sure that it covers all the countries through which you will be driving, including Slovenia.

The standard Green Card provides insurance coverage for up to 1 year.

When do I need to take out a Slovenian CTPCI policy?

If your stay in Slovenia will be long (more than 6 months), or if you decide to register a car in this country, you will have to take out a local CTPCI policy. Slovenian law requires that all vehicles registered in the country must have compulsory third-party liability insurance.

Who has to take out a local policy?

- If you have been granted a temporary residence permit and plan to stay in Slovenia for more than 6 months, you will need to register your car and take out a local CTP insurance policy.

- Ukrainians who have received a permanent residence permit or purchased real estate and decided to stay for a long period of time are also required to take out insurance in Slovenia.

How do I get a local policy and what happens if I don't?

A local CTP insurance policy is issued in one of the insurance companies in Slovenia. The process is similar to the one in Ukraine: you conclude an agreement with the chosen insurer, which will cover liability to third parties in case of accidents.

There are significant fines for not having a valid insurance policy in Slovenia. If the police stop you and find out that you do not have insurance, you will usually face a fine of at least EUR 1,000, and your car may be impounded until the fine is paid and insurance is obtained.
