On October 9, 2024, as part of the World Academic Summit, the British rating agency Times Higher Education released the results of one of the most influential university rankings in the world. According to the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, this year a record number of Ukrainian higher education institutions (HEIs) were included in the ranking - 17 universities from different cities of Ukraine.

Record number of Ukrainian universities in the world university rankings

In 2024, the number of Ukrainian universities that applied to participate in the ranking reached 55, which is a third more than last year. This demonstrates the growing interest of Ukrainian universities in international recognition and evaluation of their activities.

Geography of Ukrainian participants

The ranking includes universities from different regions of Ukraine:

● Dnipro

● Ivano-Frankivsk

● Kyiv

● Lviv

● Odesa

● Sumy

● Uzhhorod

● Kharkiv

● Chernivtsi

Leaders among Ukrainian universities

Sumy State University has been ranked the highest among Ukrainian universities, joining the group of universities ranked in the range of 801-1000 in the world ranking. This is a significant success for a Ukrainian university in the international arena.

All other Ukrainian institutions are in the 1501+ group. Although these positions are not high on a global scale, the very fact of entering the ranking is an important step in the development and international recognition of Ukrainian universities.

Three Ukrainian universities appeared in the ranking table for the first time:

1. Bogomolets National Medical University

2. I. I. Mechnikov Odesa National University

3. Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University

Methodology of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025

According to the ranking methodology, the activities of universities were evaluated by 18 performance indicators, which are grouped into five generalized indicators:

1. Educational activities

2. Research environment

3. Quality of research

4. Cooperation with industry

5. International openness

In total, 2095 institutions from 115 countries were evaluated. To create the ranking, Times Higher Education analysts have done extensive work:

– Analyzed 157 million citations

– Researched 18 million scientific publications from the Scopus database

– Interviewed more than 93 thousand scientists from around the world in their own reputation surveys

The appearance of 17 Ukrainian universities in the Times Higher Education ranking is a significant achievement for the national higher education system. This demonstrates the growing integration of Ukrainian universities into the global educational space and their desire to meet international standards of education and research quality.

Although the positions of Ukrainian universities in the ranking are not yet the highest, the very fact of their presence in this prestigious list is an important step towards international recognition and further development of higher education in Ukraine.
