3 As of 11 June 2017, Ukrainian citizens holding a biometric passport do not need a visa to enter Spain. However, the visa-free regime applies only to short-term trips - tourist, medical or to visit relatives. Holders of non-biometric passports must also apply for a visa. Read the article to find out how to choose a visa for emigration to Spain and what steps to take to make your life in the sunny country comfortable.

What types of visas are available in Spain?

First of all, visas are divided into two categories according to their functional purpose:

- immigration - for permanent residence in the country;

- non-immigrant - for temporary stay in the country.

Those who want to emigrate to Spain need an immigration visa. If you want to travel for a long period of time (more than 3 months) to carry out certain activities, you should take care of applying for a category D visa. This can be a work visa (can be issued for several years), a student visa (issued for 1 year), a visitor visa (issued for relatives, friends or a company registered in Spain - valid for up to 1 year, you can stay in the country for 90 days within 6 months).

Ukrainians in Spain can obtain or extend temporary protection, which is valid until 4 March 2025. To learnhow to obtain a TIE card in Spain, follow the link.

What documents are required to apply for a visa at the Spanish consulate?

1. Completed and printed online application form

2. Confirmation with the application number

3. A written agreement

4. Foreign passport of a citizen of Ukraine (full photocopy of all pages of this passport) - in case of other valid foreign passports, all originals and full copies of these passports are provided (validity period - 3 months from the date of the end of the trip)

5. Two colour photographs of 3.5×4.5 size, 80% of the face, white background

6. A photocopy of all pages of the internal passport (for biometric passports - an additional copy of the extract from the register of the territorial community on the place of residence)

7. Certificate from the place of work (all phone numbers must be active and up-to-date so that consular officers can call to check).

8. Information about the old passport (original and copy of the cancelled passport, certificate from the Federal Security Service - if it has been withdrawn).

9. Bank statement (60 euros per day per person is required);

10. A sponsorship letter, which is issued in case of lack of funds.

What are the terms of visa application to Spain?

The Embassy of Spain in Kyiv generally issues a visa within 14 days. To be sure that everything will happen as quickly as possible, we recommend that you contact a visa lawyer. They will help you fill out the application form correctly, collect and submit all the necessary documents, and resolve any disputes if necessary.

How to obtain permanent residence in Spain?

Permanent residence permit allows a person to stay in Spain for an unlimited period of time without additional documents and enjoy all the rights of Spanish citizens (except for the right to vote, hold public office, serve in the armed forces and police).

The residence permit is issued for a period of 5 years and can be extended. To do this, you need to submit a relevant application no later than 30 days before the expiry of the residence permit. If the documents for the extension are not submitted, it will be automatically cancelled after 3 months.

Information for car owners planning to move to Spain can be found here.

How to get a work permit in Spain?

Since a person who has received a permanent residence permit is not a Spanish citizen, he or she also needs to obtain a work permit. Without this document, employment is prohibited.

The work permit must be obtained together with a visa at the Spanish consulate at the place of residence. It is worth taking care of this in advance, because, unlike a visa, obtaining a work permit is a lengthy process (2-3 months, during which you need to stay in the country).
