Ukrainian children under the age of 13 who are under temporary protection in Poland may face problems when re-entering the country. The main reason is that they do not have the Diia.pl electronic document, uapl.info reports.

This document is required for legal crossing of the Polish border.

Here's what we know about the reasons and when children can lose access to electronic documents.

Problems with documents for children

If children have lost access to the Diia.pl electronic document, they will not be able to enter Poland, even if they have a PESEL number. The Border Guard Service explained that only having a PESEL without a valid Diia.pl electronic document does not give the right to cross the border. This problem affects children whose parents have changed their legal status in Poland.

In particular, after one of the parents or guardians receives a “residence card” (temporary residence permit), children who were “linked” to their profiles in the Diia.pl application lose access to this document. Since children under 13 are not allowed to create a trusted profile in Poland on their own, they become vulnerable to problems with their legal stay.

How to solve the problem?

To solve this problem, parents or guardians of children need to re-apply for restoration of access to Diia.pl for their children. Changes in Polish legislation that came into force on July 1, 2024, allow for electronic documents to be issued even for minor children. This will allow them to re-enter Poland and travel to Schengen countries.

What is Diia.pl?

The Diia.pl electronic document was developed in March 2022 to provide Ukrainian refugees with digital access to Polish electronic services. Since July 2022, this document has been recognized as a digital certificate of legal residence of Ukrainians in Poland.

In addition, it allows them to freely cross the EU's external borders and travel within the Schengen area for up to 90 days.

Since June 2023, Ukrainians can add their children's data to this application. To do this, the child must have PESEL UKR status and be “tied” to one of the parents, which greatly simplifies border crossing procedures.

The solution to this problem is to update documents in a timely manner and apply for the issuance or renewal of the Diia.pl electronic document for children, which will avoid obstacles during travel.
