The Czech Republic has tightened control over Ukrainian refugees staying in the country on the basis of temporary protection. This is reported by echo24.cz.
The main purpose of these measures is to prevent abuse of the social assistance system. If the police or other authorities find out that a person is not at the specified address in the Czech Republic, this may lead to the cancellation of payments.
Regular returns to Ukraine and the impact on benefits
The rules of temporary protection in the Czech Republic allow Ukrainian refugees to travel to Ukraine, but only those who are on the territory of the Czech Republic can apply for financial assistance.
According to the Minister of the Interior Vit Rakusan, if Ukrainians regularly travel to their homeland, they lose their right to support. The authorities have the right to check the actual place of residence of refugees to avoid situations where a person receives assistance in the Czech Republic but spends most of his or her time in Ukraine.
Possible consequences of violations
If the check shows that the person is not at the address indicated, their temporary protection may be revoked, which will automatically mean the loss of the right to social benefits. According to Mr. Rakushan, these measures were introduced to better prevent abuse.
Given the large number of refugees in the Czech Republic (approximately 370,000 people), it is impossible to ensure constant monitoring of each of them. However, checks are conducted not only for Ukrainians but also for other foreigners who have been granted temporary asylum in the country.

Changes in the rules for providing housing for refugees in the Czech Republic
Since September 1, 2023, there have also been changes in the rules for providing humanitarian housing. Now Ukrainian refugees can live in the provided housing free of charge for only 90 days instead of the previous 150. These restrictions apply even to those who are unable to work due to age or other circumstances - such persons must rent their own housing.
Increased payments for vulnerable categories
Although the total amount of humanitarian aid remains unchanged (4,860 CZK per month for an adult or child), the Czech government plans to increase payments for vulnerable groups starting next year.
Thus, the amount of assistance for children with disabilities will increase to 11,835 CZK (472 EUR), and for adults with disabilities - to 11,690 CZK (466 EUR).
In addition, the housing allowance, which currently amounts to 3,000 CZK (120 euros) per month, may be increased starting in January.
Thus, the Czech Republic not only strengthens control over compliance with the conditions of temporary protection, but also supports vulnerable categories of refugees by increasing the amount of social benefits for them.
