Traveling in neighboring Europe by car opens up many tourist opportunities, but also imposes certain responsibilities and duties on the driver. Here are the top 3 foreign destinations for traveling by car in the fall of 2024, as well as the rules for such trips.
Austria: not by waltzing alone
Mozart, waltz, Viennese coffee, medieval castles and... the smell of hay. For an exquisite vacation for body and soul in the fall, motorists should take a drive through Austria. This mountainous country with a wealth of cultural heritage welcomes tourists all year round, but it is in the fall that the inhabitants of Austrian villages and towns organize colorful festivals. One of them is the famous festival “Peasant Autumn”, which is dedicated to the harvest and takes place from mid-August to the end of October. During this period, you can taste plenty of Austrian dishes, dance to Austrian folk music, and simply get acquainted with Austrian-Alpine customs and traditions. It's really interesting, because Austrians know how to meet and surprise tourists.
You can start your journey to Austria by car from the Kyiv-Chop highway and then via the Hungarian highway. To avoid mistakes made by many motorists, do not plan your route to Austria via Slovakia if your goal is not to visit this country. The route will be longer and more complicated, because the road through Slovakia to Austria only visually looks shorter on the map, but is actually longer. While the highway through Hungary (M1) passes in such a way that it does not touch the cities, so the road is quite fast.
Interesting! Europeans have long been using the “Fly and Drive” travel format when traveling across the continent. The essence of this way of traveling is to immediately rent a car upon arrival in another country and continue the journey behind the wheel.

In the best traditions of Moldova's wine country
Moldova is a small, hospitable and quite sunny country, known primarily for its winemaking. Vineyards, wine shops with hundreds of varieties of wines and the general cheapness of Moldova create really attractive conditions for tourism, but many people do not notice this. However, after traveling to Moldova by your own car, you will have only the warmest memories.
There are many small private vineyards in the country that offer guests of Moldova many unique wines made according to family recipes, the secret of which no one will reveal to you here. Tourism in Moldova is especially popular in the fall. The riotous grape harvest in this season gives tourists the opportunity to taste young wines, as well as simply eat grapes to their heart's content. But the main wine tradition worth visiting Moldova in the fall is the Wine Day, which has been celebrated here in October since 2002.
The main celebrations of the wine festival take place in the capital Chisinau. But in other regions, you can also see local events, sometimes quite authentic (in some Moldovan villages).
One of the most popular large wineries in Moldova that tourists can visit is the underground city of wine in Milestii Mici, with a total length of streets of almost 200 km. Tours are regularly organized around the city and tasting rooms are always open.
However, don't assume that there is nothing else to see in Moldova besides wineries. There are plenty of cultural attractions, as well as amazing nature everywhere.
You can travel around Moldova in one day. However, we recommend spending at least a few days in this country to visit several locations: some people will choose to go to Milestii Mici, and others will simply drive along the roads of Moldova, stopping in Moldovan wine villages.
You can learn more about the rules for entering Moldova by car in our previous article.
The Tatra Mountains. The Carpathians can be different
If you have been to the Carpathians and think that you have seen everything there, it makes sense to visit the so-called Polish Carpathians, which can be reached by car.
The Tatra Mountains are located in the Polish and Slovakian parts of the Carpathians and have a significantly different climate from the Ukrainian Carpathians. The snow cover here lasts until May-June, and the climate is very similar to the alpine, where the weather is very changeable. The area has the status of a protected area in both Poland and Slovakia, and this attracts tourists who are not indifferent to natural beauty even more.
Among the interesting locations in the Tatra Mountains is the beautiful at any time of the year mountain lake Morskoe Oko, which is located in the upper part of the Rybieczyszczy Potok Valley in Poland. There is so much traffic of cars with tourists that in the summer season there are traffic jams on the approaches to the lake. But in the fall, when this mountainous area becomes even more amazing under the influence of golden red colors, it is easily accessible by car. The lake is reached by the Wojewodski road through Poronin or the Oswald Balzer road, which lead to Palenica Białczanka, where the parking lot in front of the lake is located.
At the same time, the lake and the surrounding area are a fairly large location where you can take one of the picnic tables on the shore, and if you need to spend the night, there is a shelter with the same name nearby called “Sea Eye”.
We wrote about how to leave Ukraine in someone else's car here.
Prepare for the trip: documents, car serviceability, insurance
Prepare your car for a trip abroad in advance. To do this, you should keep in mind some mandatory rules:
1. You can only drive out of Ukraine if the vehicle has the appropriate state license plates;
2. You can travel abroad by your own or rented car only if you have a GREEN CARD insurance policy;
3. The car must be equipped with a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, emergency sign, etc.
4. Inquire in advance about the glass tinting standards in a particular country.
Also, when planning any trip to Europe, you should take care of travel insurance for yourself and your loved ones - it is mandatory when visiting European countries on a tourist visa. Visit Ukraine portal strongly recommends that Ukrainians travel safely with travel insurance, because the specifics of traveling by car carries many risks and unforeseen situations that have already been calculated by the relevant insurance policy.
Remember. It is not enough to have a passport and travel insurance to travel abroad by car. After all, crossing the Ukrainian border in your car requires the mandatory presence of Green Card car insurance. This policy guarantees compensation for all property damage and damage to health to third parties in the event of an accident and is valid in 46 European countries.
You can take out a Green Card insurance policy on our website. It is convenient, fast and safe. While it is not always possible to buy a GREEN CARD directly when leaving Ukraine, at a checkpoint. Firstly, it is more expensive. And secondly, not every checkpoint offers the Green Card.
Just a reminder. To get from Poland to France by car, you need to know not only the best routes, but also observe some peculiarities of traveling in Europe in general.
