The State Customs Service of Ukraine announces the receipt of new portable scanning systems that will be used for checks at checkpoints. The article below explains how the scanners will improve the situation at the border and how the devices work.

With the assistance of the United States Agency for International Development, Ukrainian customs officers have received 20 portable backscatter X-ray machines designed to check citizens at the border.

Portable scanning systems send so-called beams through bags, suitcases or other items. These beams pass through the object, and some of them bounce back, like a ball against a wall. The device catches these reflected rays and uses them to create a picture of what is inside. This picture shows whether there are metal objects, liquids or anything suspicious inside.

The State Customs Service of Ukraine notes that training for scanning system operators will soon begin, as the specifics of the devices are quite complex.

It is reported that all scanning devices will be distributed among the checkpoints on Ukraine's western border.

The new equipment should speed up border checks and reduce queues.
