Greece attracts millions of tourists every year because of its scenic beauty and comfortable climate. Travelling around this country by car can be an exciting experience, but before setting off, it is important to know the basic rules of the road, the amount of fines and the peculiarities of toll roads.

Traffic rules in Greece

In Greece there are common European rules of the road. They are the same as Ukrainian ones. First of all, it is worth knowing that in the country, as in most European countries, right-hand traffic is established.

Speed limits in Greece are also similar to other European countries:

- populated area - 50 km/h;

- outside a populated area - 90 km/h;

- motorway - 110 km/h;

- motorway - 130 km/h.

Of the main prohibitions, you should also know that in this country it is forbidden to use mobile phones while driving. The permissible blood alcohol level is 0.05% for drivers with more than two years of experience and 0.02% for novice and professional drivers.

Road Signs

Road signs in Greece conform to European standards, so they will be familiar to most drivers. However, it is worth bearing in mind that many signs may be written in Greek.

Penalties for traffic offences in Greece

Fines in Greece are quite high and have been increasing recently. This is largely due to the difficult economic situation in the country. Therefore, everywhere and always be careful.

The most common fines that are issued in Greece

Speeding: up to 20 km/h - 40 euros fine, from 20 km/h to 30 km/h - 50 euros, more than 30 km/h - 175 euros and possible deprivation of licence for 2 months.

Improper parking - 80 euros or removal of licence plates for a particularly serious offence.

Unbuckled seat belts for driver and passengers - 350 euros.

Overtaking offence - 700 euros.

Driving through a traffic light or sign - 700 euros.

Failure to miss a pedestrian at a pedestrian crossing - 200 euros.

Using a mobile phone while driving - 100 euros.

Separately it is worth mentioning fines for drunk driving. In Greece, such drivers are treated very strictly, despite the fact that alcohol content up to 0.5 ppm is allowed.

Fines for blood alcohol content:

- 0.5 to 0.8 ppm - 200 euros;

- 0.8 to 1.1 ppm - 700 euros;

- more than 1.1 ppm - 1200 euros, as well as deprivation of licence and the possibility of arrest for 2 months.

How to pay fines in Greece?

Fines can be paid at a bank branch or at the post office. To do this, you just need to go there and give the manager a receipt and money.

You can also ask the officer for detailed instructions on where to pay the fine.

Parking fines are paid in the same way. The system of paying half of the fine within a certain period of time does not work in Greece.

Toll roads in Greece

Individual roads in Greece are tolled for the distance travelled, the toll also depends on the category of vehicle (based on the number of axles and height).

Payment is made before entering the toll road.

Which roads require tolls and how much they cost

- Egnatia motorway - the price varies from €0.3 to €8.4 depending on the vehicle category and distance.
