A large number of Ukrainians have travelled to Spain by car. It takes some time to get used to the rules of the road abroad. And to protect yourself from unpleasant situations on the roads, vehicle insurance will help you get compensation in the event of an accident. We will tell you about the types of insurance in Spain, their differences and whether Ukrainians need to take out local policies in this article.

Car insurance in Spain: details

In order to avoid unpleasant situations on the roads, drivers should familiarise themselves with the intricacies of the traffic rules in Spain and make sure they have reliable vehicle insurance.

There are 2 main types of insurance in Spain: local motor third party liability insurance, which is compulsory, and motor hull insurance.

Car insurance in Spain 

● Basic motor third party liability insurance (a terceros básico) is the simplest and cheapest option for car insurance in Spain, which is compulsory for all car owners with local licence plates. It covers losses for damage caused to third parties: if you cause an accident, the insurance company will cover the costs of repairing your damaged car, treating the injured, etc.
● There is also an option to take out basic motor third party liability insurance with additional compensation for window repairs (a terceros básico con lunas). This is an advanced car insurance option that supplements basic motor third party liability insurance by covering the cost of repairing car windows. In the event of damage or cracking of the windscreen, side or rear window, as well as the factory panoramic roof or sunroof, the insurance company will fully cover the cost of their repair.
● Extended motor third party liability insurance (a terceros ampliado). It covers not only window repairs and damage caused to other parties in the event of an accident, but also arson and vehicle theft.

It is worth adding that insurance companies in Spain, when issuing motor third party liability insurance, additionally offer the option of ‘kilometro cero’, which covers the cost of a tow truck in case of a vehicle breakdown.

Motor hull insurance in Spain 

● Motor hull insurance without a deductible (a todo riesgo sin franquicia). A voluntary type of car insurance that provides comprehensive financial protection for your car in the event of an accident, theft, damage by natural phenomena or other unforeseen situations. It covers third-party liability, car repairs and additional options that can be selected individually before taking out a policy.
● Motor hull insurance with a deductible (a todo riesgo con franquicia). Covers all the risks as well as the non-deductible policy, but obliges the driver to pay a certain fixed amount (deductible) on his/her own. The rest of the losses will be covered by the insurer.

Do Ukrainians need to take out Spanish insurance?

The UN Refugee Agency reports that according to the law, Ukrainians have the right to drive vehicles with Ukrainian registration on Spanish roads for 213 days from the start of temporary protection.

Therefore, during this period, it is not mandatory to obtain local insurance policies.

However, in order to enter and legally drive your own car with foreign registration on Spanish roads, a Green Card is a prerequisite.

The Green Card is an international insurance policy for motorists. If you have travelled from Ukraine in your own car, you know that this policy is mandatory for crossing the border. However, it is also valid in Spain. The main thing is to keep track of the policy's validity period and renew it in time.

Remember that the Green Card is valid not only in Spain and Ukraine, but also in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, so you will be under reliable insurance protection even when travelling to other countries.

It is better to buy insurance online, because it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can take out a Green Card policy from a licensed insurer.
